Whew, lots of posts to catch up on! Congrats to all who are getting new eggs and building new coops, and best of luck to those starting new coops.

Chickielady, so sorry to hear about the knee!

Everyone who is in pain, I hope you are feeling better.

I had a lot of response to my Craigslist ads the first couple of days, but since it's slowed down now I thought I'd post pics again here just in case anyone is interested! I need to get my cockerels GONE. The Silkies are crowing and as much as I hate to see them go I can't jeopardize the rest of the flock.

I'm offering these boys to any WA BYCer's for FREE. I would be willing to try and meet up within 20 miles of my home if you're interested. I would really like to find them good homes. The blue and partridge are both from Catdance eggs. I don't know who the breeder was for the pretty white. The blue and partridge are a little over 4 months, the white a couple of weeks younger. ALL have had their Marek's vaccination.

PM me if you're interested! All hand raised in my home until they were 8 weeks old.

KMHunter- the first time I shot a gun I wasn't yet 2 years old! My dad took me and a cousin, laid us down in the back of his truck bed, propped up the gun on a pillow, and we shot at squirrels (and killed a bunch!) ion a field that day. I grew up around guns, knives, hunting, animals, and "dangerous" stuff but even at 2 I had common sense not to touch guns unsupervised. My dad woulda killed me if the gun hadn't! LOL it's a different world now and I feel like my kid are missing out

We have guns, but they have gun locks and ammunition is stored separately. We have bows - again out of the reach of the kids. We have a BB gun, but the kids must be supervised while using it. All three of my kids have pocket knives, but they are supervised when whittling. My oldest has earned his whittling chip through Cub Scouts and has been allowed to carry a pocket knife with him to Den meetings for over a year. My 10-year-old has shot paint ball guns, archery, and has thrown hatchets (a large ax thrown at a stump). I may be a safety-freak, but my kids are not missing out at all. They are taught safety skills, supervised carefully, and are taught to respect the tool whatever it may be (whether it is a weapon or a power tool). My children have been using a Dremel tool for a few years, as well.

I grew up with a bear/deer/elk/moose hunter. The man was crazy enough to hunt bear with a long bow that he built himself - and he got 3. Thank heavens he followed the bow up with a .44. We had guns, compound bows, long bows - you name it, we probably had it. When I was a kid I used to have to help my step-dad clean his black powder rifle. And my "special" job was pulling all the guns out from underneath the house when he wanted them. Blech!

I'm not against any of these things. I am extremely safety conscious and drive respect for weapons/tools into my children's little brains. One slight mis-step and you can have a major accident or a death. My step-dad was a carpenter for 50 years before he accidentally cut 3 of his fingers off with a table saw. Going to the hospital with him that day was devastating. I've experienced life, and have seen accidents happen. My children are young, and as their parent, it is my responsibility to teach them instead of leaving it up to chance that they will have common sense at a young age.

They are beautiful. Too bad they are boys. I hope you find a home for them soon.

Lunch is over. I've got to get going. I haven't even seen my girls yet today, or checked for eggs. School may have started, and my kids may be gone 6 hours each day, but that means my schedule actually increases. Cub Scouts starts this evening. I'm leading a different den this year - I've taken over the Bear den, my youngest son's den, since my oldest is going to advance into Boy Scouts a year early.

Beginning next week, the evening schedule will include Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, piano lessons and Cub Scouts. And, I am determined I will start making it to the gym beginning Monday morning. Whew! I'm tired just thinking about it! I'm signed up for the Girlfriend's Half Marathon in the middle of October, and I'm so, so, so, so not ready! Last year I trained for 6 months for it. I've haven't done any training this year at all. Such a scary thought! I made the mistake of signing up for it when I was in shape last year.

Quote: Contact your local extension office. They can also put in touch with local beekeepers too! Speaking of this afternoon I am having to move ALL of my bee equip out of the barn!! Seems that suddenly the bees have decided they want to spend too much time in there.
Quote: The talk about guns..... When I was a Frosh in high school I took my shot gun to school. Checked it into the Principals office and at the end of day took it on the school bus ride to my friends house 7 miles away. Then when I got old enough to drive I always had a rifle in my truck (as did many) see we lived in wheat country and there were lots of "NEEDS". Now days if a kid gets caught with a cartridge at school they are in trouble.

My 63-year-old father often used to carry a hunting rifle to public school in Columbia, TN, from age eight right up until graduating from high school. As long as he put it straight into his locker and didn't take it out until it was time to go home, no one hassled him about it. How times have changed!!!

I have a question on chicks. There are two feed stores that are getting in chicks this weekend: Reber Ranch and Monroe Farm and Feed. Monroe F&F is getting them in tomorrow and I'll be in the area anyway, so I'm thinking of stopping by, picking up all the supplies I need and taking a look at the chicks. If I get chicks from MF&F and also get some from RR, do I raise them in separate brooders, or put them together? Do I quarantine them like I would if I added older birds together? I might be getting two of the breeds that I want from breeders as well. For those I assume I keep them separate. Is 30 days enough? Will it work to raise every up (and quarantine as necessary) and then add them to the new coop and run together since it will be new territory for all of them?
