In essence she doesn't "need" a helmet since she goes all of 2 miles an hour on her bike with training wheels.

I know it's the law, but I won't enforce it full time on our little side street IYKWIM.

It's not the kids you need to worry about. It is the drivers of the cars. I grew up on a street very similar to yours. Very, very little traffic - it was a road that went no where. I got hit by a car, on the side of my road - right in front of my house. I saw the car coming and pulled to the side of the road to get out of the way. The teenager lost control of the vehicle and slid off the road. I was six-years-old.

I snapped my femur in half. We were told I was lucky to be alive, because if the main blood vessel had been nicked, I would have bled out and died. I lost a good inch out of my femur bone. I'm sure you have noticed - my back is twisted and deformed. I have lived my entire life in pain because of getting hit by that car.

I care about you and your kids. I'm a huge advocate of bicycle safety because of what I went through as a child (and as a teen - when you have a deformity, you get treated horrible by teenagers).

Renee - I keep forgetting to tell you...I can go to the fair tomorrow! We're dropping DH off at his physical therapist for work hardening for 4 hours. That starts at 9am so I can probably meet you between 9-9:15 or so and will have until noon to fart around with you and the kids for FREE! Woohoo! Then I have to take them to lunch and pick up Isaac, and my physical therapist appt. is at 1:30 at the same place. First time there so it'll be a long appt, so we can't have you over for coop work. Bummer. But I really want to meet you for the fair and poultry stuff, farm stuff, maybe look at some other exhibits and let the kids pet some animals.

Quote: The risk of one's kid getting hurt are small, but it's still a risk I was never willing to run with my sons. Some people have a higher tolerance for risk than I do.

I was just hearing about a study yesterday on KUOW on head injuries and Alzheimers and Lou Gehrigs disease. There is a very clear corelation between head injures, especially repeated head injures, and the likelyhood of developing these diseases.

You live in King County. Be aware that King County DOES have a helmet law - which is why I'm bringing you helmets.

I think you know this from Facebook - one of my Webelos was hit by a car over the summer. If he had not been wearing a helmet that had been given to him from the Fire Station, he would have died. He will have lifelong injuries and he will never look the same. He still can not walk, and we don't know how long it will be before he will be able to walk.

Your husband is a Firefighter - I'm surprised he hasn't gotten helmets from the station.
My husbands brother died from a head injury. He was hit by a car on his skateboard. A helmet would have saved his life :(

I do not know - they didn't send a list of breeds they're getting along with the advert. I wonder if they would have that information if they were called?

Oh wait - just went to their web page. You can sign up for their "ChickVille" information and it would be sent to you. Here's a list of breeds.

Hmm, they do have Wyandottes. I wish they were closer! Gig Harbor is an hour plus drive for me. Still waiting to hear back from RR.

Can we form a club as a family? There are quite a few projects we'd like to do. I ordered the 4-H catalog and my husband and I have been discussing them. We'd like to do chickens. He's an electrician, so we'd like to do the electrical one. My kids are into robotics, so we'd like to do the robotics one. And, I'd like to do the sewing one with my daughter. I'm curious if we can just order the books and do the projects on our own. If we do it on our own - can our kids show chickens at the fair - or do they have to be in a specific type of a club to do that?
We formed our own club because we had a core group of families who did lots of other things and didn't want to make 4H a focus. We meet in the Spring for a while, do the fair, and adjourn until next Spring. We do poultry only, so it's easy. Kids are in Boy Scouts, sports, lots of stuff besides 4H.

Phew! John is on his way to Flag Football practice with my BIL and nephew; I have 2 sweet little girls playing in Jeanine's room (my niece...we kid swapped for the evening) and William is in there bothering them. Gonna be a long evening if he persists. Maybe i can have him help me make dinner......
