That doesn't mean I can afford it.

Yes, we use supplemental lighting in almost all the coops. And watch, as the days get longer, you will notice a slow down in eggs. And yes, your 14 wks old may very well hold out till spring if you don't provide light. We have ours set up on timer's, and I was just telling DH he needs to get them set up this weekend. It will only be a couple of weeks before the daylight is too short!

I think so too! You would probably only need a 20watt bulb in there at the most!
From what I understand it is BREED that matters most, not diet or individual birds, re: winter laying!
ooo I want an olive egger
That should be fine. I bought chicks weeks apart in order to get all the breeds I wanted, and they all integrated just fine. I was amazed how easily they accepted new additions. They would be one day apart. I'm not going to get a ton of them if I get any. I am betting they will have straight run, so I would get 2-3 of each kind that I want, and they will likely only have Wyandotte and Polish. I haven't been able to find a list of what they are getting.
No need to light the run, as they won't go out into it if it's dark and they can't see. They can't see at all in the dark! I have the timers set to come on both morning and evening. Some folks just do morning, as they fear that their birds won't roost in time before the lights go off at night, but I've never had that happen......that I know of.
