WHEW!!!!! It might not get so bad after all. Drama is 7 lbs. right now. She's supposed to get to 9.5 - so she only has about 2.5 lbs. of growing left to do. I can put my "Jersey Giant at the Fair" nightmare to rest.

I think you have to get giants from good stock. My hatchery jersey giant never got bigger than my australorps.

Interesting....with all this hedgehog talk lately, I just read an email that I got from the Oregon State Veterinarian's office (I get them all due to my profession) and there's been a multi-state salmonella outbreak, linked to hedgehogs, with 5 cases reported in the state of Washington.

That fair Jersey Giant must have been good stock.... that thing was HUGE!

So Caunnie (my EE) weighed in at 3.9 lbs. and Rhodie (my RIR) weighed in at 4.1. Weird - Rhodie looks smaller than Caunnie.

And those numbers mean those girls still have lots of growing to do, too.

I almost came home with chicks today, eeek! But I was good, and only bought supplies to set up my brooder, plus an automatic egg turner. Darn these things are pricey. I will set up my incubator tonight and make sure it fits.

Sooooo, anyone have fertile eggs in the breeds I want?

I am hoping to get blue laced red wyandottes from WA4-Hpoultrymom, plus a really nice lady I met at Monroe F&F has lavender orpingtons and I will get some of her eggs. (She had day old chicks at the store, and I was really really close to getting some then and there.) If I can hatch all the ones I want, they will grow up together. Anyone have eggs from good stock of silkie or/or silver laced Polish? Does Cloverleaf sell eggs?

I was so happy to see how much my son liked the chicks at the feed store! He liked looking in the brooders at them, and when the lady held up a LO chick, he leaned over and petted it very nicely, with no urging. I think raising my own chicks is the best way to keep him from being afraid of the chickens.

My husband and I had a great day at the fair.   We met Jessica in the chicken barn and got to see all of the chickens there.

I talked to someone about 4-H and was told that, yes, families are welcome to create their own club.  He told me to wait until October 1st to sign up because that is the beginning of the 4-H year.  He said they are having trouble making agreements with King County, so we have to wait and see if those agreements can get worked out.  There is a possibility that King County will no longer have a 4-H program at all.  I hope they get it worked out!  :fl

And... it does not look like I am ordering Light Brahma eggs tonight.  :hit   DH really doesn't want babies in the garage all winter, and I can respect that.  Next spring I should be in the clear.  Let's just hope Drama doesn't do something crazy like get this big over the winter...

On the left: Old hen RIR; On the right: Old rooster Jersey Giant

I've read that Light Brahma's are almost as big at the Jersey Giant.  I don't know if this is true or not, but when I saw that big boy, my heart sunk a bit.  I had no clue that chickens could get that big!  I wish they had a hen to compare him to.  Now I feel like I went to the fair and still don't have a clue how big Drama is going to be.  They did have Cochin hens - which were also a lot bigger than I expected.  :/

A bantam Light Brahma probably would have been much better suited to our situation.  The one we saw was about the size of my RIR and EE.

The two hatchery light brahma pullets I got last year ended up at 7 and 8 pounds. The better looking one was the bigger one. I'm hoping these I got this year end up big as well. One turned out to be a cockerel who's named Mongo. We're hoping he gets up to 10 pounds.
