Swings in temps are not bad just don't let it get more then a few degrees and the central temp is 99-100. when you add the water the temp will be a lot different then without water so stabilize the humidity and temps at the same time before adding eggs. when you add eggs the temp will drop until the eggs temps rise to the bator temps so don't play with the temps until 2 days after adding the eggs. I just crack the lid a little during the first day or so if it gets to hot. Please get a hygrometer and test it then use it! the humidity can either drown a egg or dry them out. One good trick for new incubation person is to take one egg and with a pencil or marker draw the air sack. then every 3-5 days draw the air sack again on the egg. it should be slowly getting larger but not so fast that 1/2 the egg is air by hatch time and not so slow that there is not enough air sack for the chick to hatch.
The humidity is the trick to incubation..... due to the fact that the humidity in the air/room as well as in the bator affects the hatch.

Yes I know... But this is the first time in 9 years I've had weekends off and it was not my choice... I'd rather have the 10hr days and more days off but I did not get that this time

Thank you! I will keep an eye on the air cells.

JB, I still have not butchered the other 18 Cornish X...my knee is almost trustworthy to stand & hang onto the sink~~~~~~~~~~
I am planning on tomorrow morning.....the birds cannot waite much longer.

Well I need to go get my nails done. One of the tips got broken off, and it's making typing harder. At least I didn't loose the whole acrylic nail. I needed to get them re-filled anyway.

Me too! I don't even know if I could handle doing food coloring either, though I really truly would love to know which color eggs are coming from which hens. Everyone started laying at the same time and I don't have time to check every birds' vent to see if they are laying. I guess I'm only unsure of one or two. I at least know we have 7!

Bad internet today - nation wide :(

Hmm, all's well here! I haven't had a single outage!

I gave the girls baked and crushed up egg shells today; they were in hog heaven! Totally crazed and running all over the run trying to find more pieces in the straw. They were busy for quite some time out there! That will drastically reduce the use and cost of oyster shell if I continue doing it! Think I will keep a small bucket under the sink for egg shells and when it's half full or something like that I will bake them all together and bring it all out to scatter in the run. I don't want to do that daily, what a chore.
