Quote: JB. Maybe we had a disconnect there. I was describing what my Grandpa did with them after digging them up in order to use them through out the year.
When I was a kid I'd spend a week or more every summer at their farm near McCleary. That was fun as a kid grabbing the potatoes.

I have done the rows. The square area.

Next year I'm going to five gallon buckets so I can just dump them out and save time. Grew around 15 tomatoes in buckets this year and looks like harvest time is in about another week. Have had a few already but the main bunch be coming. I was a bit worried if there was enough soil in a 5 gallon bucket for good growth but no more. So if tomatoes do well in a bucket potatoes will also.

RE: SAD(seasonal affective disorder). I think some were interested in the OTT light that is often used for SAD but, the high price put them off. Jo Ann fabrics currently has the Ott lights on sale for 50% off. I think they also offer a coupon for free shp. on orders over $ 40. They offer them frequently . You just sign up for Jo Ann's sales flyers and get emails to your in box.

The only problem with this is they will send emails at least once a day. But that's what the 'delete' key was made for. Most of their coupon deals, sales etc. are available in- store or on line. Hope this helps somebody.

PS I would imagine plant lights (ie., Grolux wide spectrum fluorescent tubes) might also provide some relief. I hybridize streptocarpus house plants and these tubes are used to provide the effects of sunlight to encourage blooming etc. I don't know how much exposure to the light is beneficial but, I would think it would ease symptoms for SAD sufferers. The tubes are not that expensive, I think they may also come in screw in bulbs for table plant lights.

Well I managed to get the rest of the tree pruning done, and all the brush in the recycle bins. I also managed to dig up some more potatoes. I just weighed the potatoes, and there is another 17 lbs. I have gotten about 30 lbs of taters this year. I am fairly sure that this is the best year that I have ever had growing taters. I still have more to dig, but I am going to let them grow a bit more. I planted white, yellow, red, and purple taters this year. My bag of taters is very pretty. Now all I need to do is figure out how to keep them longer than a month or two. I would love to have a real cold storage room. DH talked about building me a basement, but we both know how high the water table is out here on the Plateau.

I have really over done things in the past two days, I have this fear I am going to pay for this. Still there is a lot more for me to do around the place.
Instead of a basement what about a block building, and bank dirt up about the walls? Most potato storage (commercial) that I have seen is done that way. If not block maybe corrugated metal? Just a thought

Nikki,

I think you've missed that a bunch of EW is on fire.

http://www.nwccweb.us/information/firemap.aspx

The other day there were over 95 uncontained fires in Yakima and Kittitas counties alone. Here in Yakima the smoke from the fires south of Mt Adams can clearly be seen and smelled. We have a stage 1 burn ban in effect due to the decreased air quality.

Thanks for posting the link for me. I'm not really sure how I missed all that!! I haven't heard a thing about it on the radio at all, nor have I seen it pop up on the internet...that's weird.
So sad about all these fires. Hopefully rain will come soon to help the fire fighters out!

I am happy that things worked for you tonight. I should have tried to PM you with the offer. It sounds like you had a very busy night with teaching the boys about bike safety. I hope you are able to have a better day tomorrow. If you get in a real bind again, feel free to call me. I will admit that I don't have any experience with Boy Scouts, but I can follow directions, and I did manage to get both of my kids homeschooled through the first two years of college.

Thank you so much. I wouldn't have received the PM anyway. I was hurting so bad I ran over to the couch and just face-planted. If we are ever in that situation again, I will definitely keep you in mind. It was just a strange situation, my husband, who is the Pack Committee Chair, had to be at a Council Leader's meeting in the Black Diamond area. Two of the Den Leaders had a back-to-school parent night for their school. It was just the Cubmaster and myself to run the entire Pack. The Cubmaster was trying to take care of new kid sign-ups, explaining things to parents, and Popcorn sale stuff, while I ran the Den activities. We got through it though! Whew!

Wow, that sounds horrible!! Are they migranes or just bad headaches. I get bad headaches too but not nearly as bad as what you described. That's really awesome that you have such a supportive family, the extra help can be so great!
It makes my heart hurt every time I hear about the little boy that was hit by the car. As a parent, I can't even begin to imagine being in a situation like that. I'm almost afraid to ask, but is the little boy who was hit ok?

I don't know if they are true migraines or not. I'm not exactly sure what a true migraine is. They come on very fast. I know one is coming on within an hour of getting it. I have to get into the dark. I feel like I'm going to

. I can't handle noise. At it's worst, my head hurts so bad I can't hold back the tears. Thankfully, my kids, who are typically very loud, know that if Mommy has a headache, they have to be quiet.

When the headaches hit, I try everything thinking it must be an imbalance of something I'm missing in my diet. That's why I drank a bunch of orange juice, ate a banana, popped a Vitamin C, ate some salt, and took Tylenol. We're just guessing. We don't have a clue what helps them.

Last night was probably the toughest night ever at Cub Scouts to smile and be cheerful through. I walked into the noise of all those boys, and my head felt like it was going to explode. It was a very long hour and a half! But, I got through it! Yay!

As for my Webelos boy from last year, he is alive. At this point, he can not walk. They are still waiting to find out if he will have facial repair surgery. I think there might be a cost factor involved with that, as well. I'm not positive. It sounds like things are still pretty up in the air as to what the family will decide they are able to do.

I totally understand the difficult situation they are in. To this day I have a back deformity from when I was hit on a bike at the age of 6. I grew up on welfare, and was not given the opportunity to have a back brace or raised shoe to repair the problem (I lost about 1" out of my femur). When I was 18, I went in to see if they could do anything to fix it, I was told it was too late. I hope something like that doesn't happen to this little boy.

This year I attempted something I read about online - growing potatoes in straw. It didn't work for me. I got a few, very tiny potatoes in the dirt below, nothing in the hay. Wish I hadn't tried all of them that way. I have such a tiny harvest of really small potatoes. I was growing the purple potatoes - my favorite, and they are hard to come by in stores.

Edited to change the word "hay" to "straw". I attempted to grow in straw.

I kinda figured...LOVE your screen name here. Got any sweet baby wearing pics?? My last DS hated to be worn and I have NO pics! :he

TOO many pics. Lol. I got sick of having my picture taken in a sling, and I ran out of babies, so we eventually hired someone to be in the pics. I have a bunch of cat wearing pics ;) and next I want to work on hen wearing! I have one hen In particular that I think might go for it.
