My poor girls yelled at me all day long and held out the eggs totally. I have gotten no less than 7 eggs a day from 9 girls for 10 days now, and the day I close up their favorite nesting spot and force them to use the designated ones, we only got 6. I hope we get more tomorrow!!

My favorite layers held out too...Martha (blue egg), Princess (olive egg), and Pip (copper/maroon egg)

THE CARING GRANDFATHER

A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his
badly behaved 3 year-old grandson.
It's obvious to her that he has his hands full with the child
screaming for sweets in the sweet aisle, biscuits in the biscuit aisle;
and for fruit, cereal and pop in the other aisles.
Meanwhile, Granddad is working his way around, saying in a
controlled voice, "Easy, William, we won't be long . . . Easy, boy."
Another outburst, and she hears the granddad calmly say, "It's
okay, William, just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here.
Hang in there, boy".
At the checkout, the little terror is throwing items out of
the cart, and Granddad says again in a controlled voice, "William, William,
relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes; stay
cool, William."
Very impressed, the woman goes outside where the grandfather
is loading his groceries and the boy into the car.
She said to the elderly gentleman, "It's none of my business,
but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it. That whole
time, you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got,
you just calmly kept saying things would be okay. William is very lucky
to have you as his grandpa."
"Thanks," said the grandfather, "but I'm William . . .
The little brats name is Kevin."

Well, tonight I'm kinda sad and a little torn. one of my BO chickens turned out to be a cockeral, started crowing for real today. Bet some of the neighbors are freaking. lol! Such a nice deep voice (think James Earl Jones of chickens) Well he has to go to his new home tonight. Leaving in a few minutes. I'll miss him; like everyone says he's very friendly. But on the good side of things, I found him a home on a farm where he'll get to be a rooster with his own hens and coop.

I live in Vancouver and even though we can have chickens here, I still have this fear of starting a war with my neighbors. I've only been here a couple days and I already see horror stories of people fighting against their neighbors and ordinances to keep their flock.

Welcome!

So, I'm one who did run into a few issues with neighbors. Now that the neighbors are used to the them, the dust seems to have settled (cross my fingers, knock on wood). Lately, one neighbor has commented a couple of times that he doesn't even hear my girls (whew!) even though I know they can get loud. Honestly, I think people who are not used to being around chickens, just don't understand what it will really be like. I had one neighbor who was scared my birds would always be in their yard. They haven't flown the fence, yet (cross my fingers, knock on wood). And, if they do, the girls will learn what it is like to have clipped wings. That one set of neighbors were also worried about the smell. So far, so good. I'm pretty good at cleaning up poop though. The stench is hidden inside a garbage can, and when it gets too full, I bury the poo into a garden bed. There are lots of ways to keep chickens low-key, so your neighbors stay happy.

This is very good to know. I think I was starting to learn the hard way. I have also learned that for some reason a person can never seem to get all of the potatoes out of the garden patch or bin that they were grown in. I only planted more potatoes in the stock tank, because of the volunteers. I am just going to have to get tough next year, and pull out anything that volunteers. I'm not sure what I will plant in the bin next year though. Maybe I will try peas, or beans in it.

That's why I switched to growing in a huge tree planter pot. Just dump out onto a tarp and dig away. So easy to find them all.

ETA: I blogged about it one year. You can see photos of my potatoes from a few years ago here: http://www.imaginationgarden.blogspot.com/search/label/Kennebec Potatoes

I'm a terrible blogger. I never get around to it. Someday I'll blog again.

I can find them year around in the QFC store here in town. They aren't cheap, but they are for sale all the time.

Cool! Maybe I'll have to make an occasional shopping trip to Enumclaw. We used to have a QFC here, near the Casino. Then the store and the tribe got in a squabble, and QFC moved out. We miss having a QFC.

Although rumor has they are building a new strip mall where the QFC was.

Aaaww! So sorry. Sounds like someone got a pretty great rooster though. You'll miss him, but he'll be a happy boy with his ladies.
