So I'm beginning to realize that all the planning isn't going to help. I just need my babies here and then I'll go from there. LOL I'm sure I'll figure it out...

The Red Tailed Hawked used to get some of the flock that we kept back in 1997 to 2000. The kids would find a carcass of one of the chickens. The hawks would just leave a ripped up body behind. My DD would get so mad at the hawks. She didn't mind the coyotes as much, because they would simply take the whole bird and disappear. She didn't have to deal with the body when the coyotes were on the hunt. We were free ranging back then. We didn't have a lot of losses, but there were a few. We were living east of Vancouver WA, on 5 acres, and we were surrounded by undeveloped acreages. We loved it there.

That would be just heart-breaking to find. When we couldn't find Rhodie I had all kinds of crazy thoughts were going through my head. That chickie knows how to hide! The other two let us know where they were under the bushes. Rhodie didn't make a peep and she stayed put for a long time. I was terrified I was going to find a ripped apart Rhodie.

Um, and I think I want that multilevel animal cage now just because it's free LOL I'm sure I could find some friendly critter to inhabit it... hell, I bet the rats aren't all that bad actually. My boys would find them amusing I'm sure. I can't guarantee my cats wouldn't be a little more than interested either though....

They might make a fun cat toy!

I put my son's train table out front for free a few days ago and so far, no takers... I wonder if I can somehow use that as a base and turn it in to an indoor chick house?

I bet that rediculous dog crate would even fit on top of it (hey, at least I wouldn't have to bend down all the dang time), and I could put all the chicken supplies in teh drawers... hrmmm.... (Can you tell I hate to pay for ... anything? LOL)

If I had my way I'd have 4 barred rocks reserved, I think they look crazy awesome - but I let my kids pick :) Off to google the breeds you suggested... the only reason I was trying to find some GSL is because a friend told me they are one of the sweetest breeds (she has a ton of chickens and does 4h with her family of 8 kids)

You may try the Wilco that just opened in Gig Harbor. They are going to have birds all month, different birds each week.

Another way you can house your chicks is with a playpen with mesh sides (if you already have one). We've raised several batches of chicks in ours and it has worked rather well.

Great idea... although I don't have one anymore. But I'm always seeing those suckers on craigs list! I just worry about my cats... I'm still thinking the crate is what we'll have to end up doing. I have it, so no money out there, and it'll keep them safe and with enough room to move about until they are old enough to be in their coop. I'm thinking of pulling that train table back in the house though and keeping the chicks up in my boys' room instead of on the main level (my boys have a nice big room that is mostly unused space-wise).

Oh yay! I'll give them a call in the morning and see what they have! Thanks! Pretty soon you all will be looking at the faces of my adorable chickies on my avatar instead of having to look at MY face, HAHAHAHA

Holy crap - is it seriously past 1 in the morning and I'm on a CHICKEN FORUM? My husband is going to think I've gone crazy... Although he thinks that about me anyway, regardless of the topic LOL
