Good heavens, that looks like a chicken castle! Wow! Such a cool coop!

So, are those egg mats inside the nesting boxes? Could you try some straw, or something softer?

My chickens love their nesting area, and it has a roof over the top. You could add a board to the top of the nesting boxes to make them a little more private. It would make the box darker and more cozy.

Those are my thoughts. I'm curious what suggestions others have.
Those were my thoughts too ! I would put a top on your nest box's. Then if ya wanted to do chicken math next year you could always put more nest box's on top of your existing ones. But then I would put a top on them

I know some of you were looking for plastic clear corrugated roofing last week as well. Today there was a guy in Greenlake on CL who is selling 10 ft sheets for $10 each My husband and I are going down after work as I need 3 sheets. He had 10 clear and 1 smoked for anyone else who needs them. So that will leave 8 after my 3 are bought and picked up! The Original URL is: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/mat/3280535498.html Please just don't snag my 3 before I can get off work to pick them up!

No, I completely understand where you are coming from, I'm not taking it as you coming down on me. It's been tricky to say the least. Our kids are friends with their kids and that would come to an end, we don't want that. We don't want issues with our neighbors and shooting their dog would definitely cause issues. However, with that being said, if he causes us anymore grief, it will be his last time. And like I said before, he didn't break the skin which he could have easily done if he wanted too. I just hope it doesn't go any further!!

It should be reported to animal control. Also, if your kids were ever hurt by your neighbors dog you need to file a police report and then you can get coverage for any medical bills from the dog's owners as they should have coverage under their homeowner's insurance policy. If you do not file a police report though it makes the process much more difficult. Take care!

Itsren and dawng, here's some pics of our set up as far as the inside of the chicken house. I included a pic of the nesting boxes and the roosts so you can get an idea of their locations/proximity to one another.

We have 5 LF hens of laying age and 2 bantie girls not ready to lay yet. We put in 7 boxes because we plan on getting more LF in the spring and we wanted to make sure we had plenty of spots for them to choose from. And when it comes to chicken math, who knows how many we may end up with. Lol

Here's the roosts, and you can see the nesting boxes in the lower right corner. I read that you need to make sure the nesting boxes are lower then the lowest roost bar so they don't roost on the nesting boxes. Today, I've gotten 2 eggs so far. I didn't let them out until after 11, hoping everyone would be done laying by then. I found 1 egg in a box and 1 egg on the floor in a little dug out spot in the shavings. Sometimes when they lay on the floor they don't even make a little nest, they just drop it where they stand!

I hope this helps you help me!! Thanks everyone!!

WOW VERY nice !!!! First remember you have seen my ugly old coop so I probably have no business commenting but here goes!!!! First what size are the nest boxes? I would cover some of the nest boxes to give a more "private" area. Other than that the couple other details I see are just personal preference

DH and I thought it was yummy! The kids, not so much. I went off on a rant about how I picked those berries to make them a special treat and they stick their noses in the air and refuse to eat it. DH pulled me aside and said he wouldn't eat berry pie, either, when he was a kid. He didn't like the texture. Light bulb moment - I can blame my husband for my three little picky eaters!

I have a recipe for a blackberry silk pie. No seeds, fantastic blackberry flavor and creaminess to add to the deal!

Woohoo! 9 eggs today, that means 8 from my "originals" and one so far from my new girls. I'm so proud of them! The newbies were locked in the run all day and the existing girls had access to the coop but not the run, and the whole yard. Thinking I'll do it again for a few days; my girls are absolutely ****** about the newbies.

Here's hoping when they finally all meet in the yard on Thursday??? that they don't kill each other.

I have a chicken that is acting like a rooster and I had thought that it was a hen. But she is doing the rooster attack dance at her hatch mate who is a serama rooster. She has a very small comb at this stage. She is probably 4mos maybe closer to 5mos.
She is a silkie/ EE mix
