Too bad I had to sell the incubator and am not allowed to hatch in the house anymore. It was fun, and the two Brabanters I still have from this hatch are my friendliest chickens!

I love the cute comment "Can we watch Star Wars"!!!! Made me giggle! Kids and their short attention spans!

Here here!! I second that!!!

That's horrible!! I really don't trust ANY of them!! As a vet tech I'd rather go to a vet, at least they think outside of the box!! Although I have met a vet or two I wouldn't trust to neuter my cat!! I just think the health care system needs to be revamped, and I'm not talking in a monetary governmental way here, what I'm referring to is the way the insurance company's and pharmaceutical company's have a hold on us, and the fact that a LOT of stuff in being over charged! I have been watching frontline and some other investigative reports, it's criminal really! And that doesn't even scratch the surface of the issues with the system!
sorry your kiddo had to go through all that!!
This reminds me of when I was 17 and broke my arm. After 2+ hours in an empty ER. I got up and started for the door. The nurse ask where I was going and I said to the vet in Goldendale I knew they would take care of me. Now talk about the express lane! They had me in x-ray, back in room and seen by a doc in very short time.

OK, I need advice about our injured hen. I know many of the regular posters here don't like me and have quit responding to my posts, but please, I'm very worried about our beloved Welsummer, Salma. Any experienced advice is greatly appreciated.

Her eye is a bit oozy and she's definitely lethargic. She's standing up but not moving around much. She's missing about half her tail feathers as well as a small patch missing under her wing, but there doesn't seem to be any injury there. She was on her nest for a while but I don't think she laid. I went to check on her a few minutes ago and there was a cold egg there (probably from yesterday since my BF didn't collect) and she was lying down a few feet away. She let me pick her up with no objections, which is entirely uncharacteristic of her. Normally I can't even catch her. I offered her feed and water but she refused. She kept moving her head around and I couldn't get a decent pic of the eye before she hopped off, but here's what I got:

You can see the clear-ish ooze on the left side of her eye. My BF put antiseptic solution on the cut above her eye after the attack last night and kept her inside until light, but I don't want to put anything actually in her eye. We have no money for a vet but we will figure out how to get her to one if we need to.

Please help!!

I tell ya - sometimes I find myself wondering if a vet would make a better doctor.

I wish they'd revamp the health care system too... and get rid of the "for profit" hospitals. It drives me crazy - because we have decent insurance, our local "for profit" hospital will keep us in the ER for hours and hours just because they can make a huge profit from our insurance company. I learned this from a manager who works at said "for profit" hospital. She actually recommend that we drive out to one of the non-profit hospitals if we possibly can. Unfortunately, they are not very close by.

When I fell and gave myself a concussion a little while back - they immediately ran me through triage (took my blood pressure and checked me in) and then had me sit in the waiting room for nearly three hours before seeing me. I was dazed. The medics recommended I go to the hospital. We were five minutes away, so they agreed my husband could transport me. I don't remember a lot of that evening. My husband had to tell me how things went.

We saw people come and go, but we got the long wait. After a couple hours, my kids started crying and wanted to go home, and I was beginning to feel more normal, so I asked if I left before being seen how much they planned to charge me for that blood pressure cuff, and they told me it would be at least $250 and they strongly recommended we continue to wait. We waited about another hour. They charged my insurance over $400 for triage alone. More than $400 for a blood pressure cuff... unbelievable. My poor kids got stuck sitting in hospital for 6 hours - and I'd bet were were there that long just so they could charge more. That six hours cost my insurance thousands of dollars. The bills are still coming in for that one visit, and our insurance had a lawyer contact us and ask if we'd be willing to sue the location where I fell. We told them we wouldn't sue - they did nothing wrong. I just tripped and fell. Unfortunately my insurance company is stuck paying the bills.

Could she be in shock? You should post in the emergencies section. Scramble her some eggs (protein) and keep her comfortable. I don't know about the ooze - hopefully chickielady or someone else will be on soon.

I would get her on antibiotics as soon as possible. I don't really know what advice to offer about her eye; I'm sorry.

Well, first off, I enjoy having you here on the board.

I'm so sorry about your girl. I wish I knew how to help, but I don't. I'm so sorry she got attacked by the raccoon.

As for the vet... I know you would want to take her there. I'd want to take one of my girls in, too, if they got hurt - because mine are pets. That said... I still wouldn't take a chicken into a vet. From what I understand, there are very few Avian vets, and those who do take their animals in get charged a fortune and quite often the vet can't really do anything. If you take her to a vet, you are probably more than $100 into this bird.
