I gave mine alfalfa when we had the snow and ice and they couldn't get to the grass. I wouldn't give them grass hay for fear of impacted crops. With alfalfa they just eat the leaves and the stems get left. Me putting the alfalfa on the snow and straw I put down made them come out of their shelter and get some fresh air and sun. I had a bale of alfalfa hay in their shelter most of the winter. They prefered to go eat grass and weeds over it. Then one decided to rip some out and build nests behind the bale.I have a couple questions. I'm thinking about feeding my chickens hay during the winter months. What kind do you feed chickens? Is there any one local who sells it? I'm looking for someone in south Snohomish county or King county.
