Mr Hallerlake doesn't really like me brooding them in the house. They throw so much dust and get stinky since he doesn't like to clean up after them and I can't. So, after the dog died, I figured out how to repurpose the doghouse.

I wonder if your DH has been talking to my DH?

I think the chicks are happier outside anyway!

I have a question. How far should I move the quarantine pen from the other runs? Would 100 feet be enough? I'm thinking on moving it to the front side of the house. I'm moving it north so wind wont blow from pen to pen.

I wouldn't worry that 2 days off now means hey won't lay till spring. I have found most of my brown layers barely, if at all, slow down the first winter. Slow down the second year and are pretty much not laying during the winter the third year, even with lights; but they do pick back up quickly.
Every green layer (EE) has been a very erratic layer for me, often taking long breaks all times of the year. But others have posted that the are egg laying machines.

I also have had spring hatched chicks start laying the second and third week of December, at 33 and 35 weeks.

Trying to catch up here but have to stop & say:
We had an annoying beep from a text sent at 4:30 A.M. this morning...followed quickly by another & another so figured it was an emergency.
So DH got up & checked his phone.........
And DiL water broke, and she was on her way to the hospital, and an hour later she had a 7#10 oz baby boy !!!!!!!!!!
Still have not heard the name yet ! this is 8 grandkids, and my daughter has 1 in the oven at 4 mo along........

Congrats!! That's so exciting!!

They sell them, the majority end up as food (or so I have been told.)

We will be having a freezer camp here soon for the three cockerels we have. It's just not worth it to feed them for three months and then have someone else eat them.

But if someone wants a nice EE cockerel for their flock guardian, let me know. I have three you could choose from.

LOL, don't tempt me! I really want a rooster, but with neighbors 30 feet away I doubt it would work. Not to mention that nobody at my BF's house wants to hear crowing, either. The reason I want one is, yes, to protect the flock, but also to settle down our mean hen, Gertrude. My BF has more experience keeping chickens and tells me Gert really isn't that bad as hens go and that any rooster would almost surely be meaner, both to the hens and to us (Gert is actually the most submissive to us, go figure). He's probably right. But I still want one.
