I have a question. How far should I move the quarantine pen from the other runs? Would 100 feet be enough? I'm thinking on moving it to the front side of the house. I'm moving it north so wind wont blow from pen to pen.

That would be a good idea, Mine is like clear on the back side and 1/2 an acre behind my house, my main coop is to the left side and not too far from the front of my house, so, it's pretty far away. Can't be too careful!

I have always liked Schipperkes but, the only ones I was ever exposed to was when I was a vet tech, and most of them were nervous nellies, do you think they would be good around chickens, ducks and goats?? I knew they were ratters in Belgian, but they can be yappers can't they??

We were able to teach ours to leave the pet rats alone. Whoa to any wild one though. The pets could climb over them, but if they didn't know it, they attacked. I couldn't trust Fiery around the chickens. She tried to get them. She couldn't hear commands well enough by that point to know what I wanted. I had to get in front of her and give her hand signs for anything I wanted, and her eyesight was going, too. All she knew is they were small and moved and you kill small stuff that moves. I had her in one arm and had to grab one of the juveniles in the other and she twisted over and started plucking. I'm pretty sure that if a puppy was raised with chickens, there wouldn't be any problems. Fox thought he was a cat because he was raised with them. He never could understand why all those cats we would see when out walking didn't want to be his best friend.

They were used to encourage the horses that pulled the barges as well. I've seen videos of a couple Schips used to herd sheep. I think that would be awesome teach one.

Their barks are loud for their size as they were used as watch dogs. They can be excessive barkers. Fiery would never shut up until I checked out whatever it was she thought she heard or saw. I didn't dare leave her outside alone, she HAD to be with people or she let you know how mad she was. We lived in apartments for 9 years and never had any complaints about either dog. They did understand they were small. Fiery wouldn't be first to the door, she'd hide behind me and bark.

They are supposed to be supposed to be suspicious of strangers. It's in the breed description. Makes them be better watch dogs.

The hair is the worst thing. They blow their coats twice a year. It's just horrid. Can brush out a second dog during that time. We have a German Shedder Dog right now who makes me wish for the days when it was just a twice a year hair issue.

My husband want a German Shepard, but we don't agree on how to raise dogs, I believe they are pack animals and need to be in the house, they need to be crate trained and obedient. He wants a dog outside, and he doesn't mind tying them up, ect, I say what the hells the point in having one then!!

OH BTW I love ratties!!! I used to have well, quite afew!! OK don't laugh but I actually bought hats for them!! LOL

Well, peeps I gotta call in a night! or should I say morning!1
I went to my new docs in Yakima today, great gal, and she started me on muscle relaxers, which, oh I don't know I mentioned 8 months ago to my other GP who was a PA!! But, hmm what do I know!! Anyway, just the way the symptoms are, as far as my SI joint going out, and then the anterior pelvis tilt, along with the bone on bone articulation of the ball of the femur in the acetabulum there is a lot going on, and all she had to do was put her hand on my SI joint and she's like um yea, muscle relaxer!! LOL! Cause I'm trying to find a new way to handle the pain with out getting into narcs, I way too much crap to do to be side lined by drugs, I'm gonna have to get used to the muscle relaxer but,

hopefully it will work, I also talked to the nurse who said she had an SI issue and she started going to yoga and she said of all the things she did it helped the most, problem is we live in a hole here in the lower valley, so don't know if they even have yoga here!!

Anyway, I was up till 2 am yesterday and up at 7 to take the dog to the vet, and it's 1 am now so I better get! UE if no one has answered your questions when I get on tomorrow I'll answer them, right now my eyes are crossing and I'm having problems typing this!!
OK well sorry if I missed anything, again over 100 posts to read, I think from now on, I'm gonna read through them first and respond in one post!! it just takes to long to respond individually even tho thats more personable!

I've seen some adorable pictures of people dressing their rats.

I didn't have any issues training the two schips we had. The german shepherd gave us issues, I almost didn't ever want a puppy again because of her. The aussie x heeler was awesome. He was 4 months old when we got him from the shelter and he was a terrified little thing. He wasn't going to potty inside if you gave him the outside option. He's just an awesome dog all around, though. Doesn't bark, only shed occasionally, gets along with everyone, and learns everything very quickly. Some of the chickens intimidate him.

Very good question.I really don't know that I have ever seen it asked or answered. I really don't know what is a safe distance. Mine is only about 20+/- feet away but it is in a different area of the barn and as it turns out is also down wind.
