Hey, I'm very proud of their Fudge papa! I might have me some baby Fudges running around soon. Depending on their color, their names may end up with fudge in it... caramel fudge, chocolate fudge, etc. So eggscited! The kids (my youngest boy especially) were running around excited this morning, too. I'm glad they had to go to school. Otherwise keeping their faces from being stuck to the incubator may have been difficult.

Guess what? The white mutt egg is wiggling around on it's own, too.

Now I'm just waiting to see movement out of baby "B".

The mini eco has been disinfected, lined with paper towels and is coming up to temp, now too. As soon as that one is stable, we're going into lockdown!

Quote: Thanks! Does Cucina Fresca sell them or give them away? Do the lids seal on tightly?

I live in NE Seattle, near Shoreline, LakeForest Park. Am I closer to you in Sammamish or Cucina in South Seattle? .. I don't leave the 'hood much ;) I could potentially want three, so I may be better off going directly to the source unless you have three to spare.

Well, when your used to getting at least a dozen or more every 4 to 6 days, then I get rid of all the older birds, and acquire young stock, who are just now at POL it's aggravating!! I do need to move them to the main coop where theres electricity and put the light on them, the problem with that, is with 13 hens, if and when they do start laying, the potential for massive egg over load is likely!

And since where I live every one and their brother has chickens, making it a profitable business is slim. So, yea six a half a dozen of the other, as they say! If you have young layers, and you want to have eggs during the winter, you need to put a light on them. They need at least 14 hours of light to produce, so you put a timer on you light, I know CL says she puts it on I think 6 -6?? I usually set mine to go on at 5am off at 8am and back on by what ever hour it gets dark at, for another how ever many to make up 14, I don't see the point in having it on when it's light out obviously. It worked last time I did it that way. They say you can burn your hens up that way, but, I say, get some quality birds and you shouldn't have a problem! Again just MHO!!
Good luck!

Thanks! We definitely need to get on this light thing!! I'm a newbie, this is our very 1st flock so I've got a lot to learn through trial and error!! Good luck to you too!

Thanks!! NO problem !! you gotta start somewhere!!

So they have a chance at being black? AWESOME! Oh my gosh, my youngest son would be beside himself. He wants a black chicken so bad! I won't tell my son though, just in case none of them are black. He doesn't deal with disappointment well.

Quote: Sorry I didn't get on here sooner. The fire is about 3 miles from me to the east. As everyone has the same prob, it is fire tender dry here.
Computer was acting weird and as I sat pondering and being befuddled CR called and that was the first I heard about the fire.
We have some moisture in the air, just a faint mist not enough to do any good though I believe.

yep that's what I would do, the only time I've had them rock is when they were getting ready to hatch, also, I know you said you may not be hatching anything any time soon, but here is a picture of what I use to candle, I got the idea from another forum member, I have all brown egg layers and you can see pretty well as long as you are in a darker room

I got all this stuff at lowes, I think it was about 20 bucks or so, that's a rubber washer, and a pvc fitting, dang it, I don't have the sizes!! I thought I wrote it down!!

anyway FWIW.

Oh jeez!! be careful mikey!! I know it's been tough all summer! We have had the remnant effects of all the other fires going on in the state, a smokey haze pretty much every day for a long time!!

the good news is they are calling for rain, even here, by this weekend!! I guess I'll believe it when I see it!
