Waste Not, Want Not

Chickens are omnivores and I believe they are healthier when they have a variety of food. I always give my backyard flock kitchen scraps and leftovers. If I had a pickup, I'd probably stop along the road and pick up dead dear that get hit by a car. That would make some good meat for the chickens. Don't think I would cook it up, but maybe cut it up raw into pieces and freeze it in smaller bags until fed to the chickens.

Ahhh a fellow redneck! I have gotten fresh road kill deer for the chickens(and the family). I don’t cook the deer meat. Raccoons can carry trichinosis though and I don’t know of a chicken can catch ir tranfer that so I boil the coon and possum meat.

Back in the days of small farms with free-range flocks, it was often the job of the “greenest” farm hand during the winter to trap, dispatch, and serve to the flock some “free range protein” from around the property.
