Wasted feed?!?!

Here lately my 6 birds have been going through ALOT of feed...... I've noticed that a lot of its on the ground beside the PVC feeder I made..... Are they just digging through the feed and looking for what they want or what? The one thing I thought of is that I just recently switched to Texas Natural Feed and i wonder if they don't like it?!?! Still seems as if they are growing so I'm not concerned with them NOT eating.....

Some people put an oil pan or black rubber pan (fortex) from the feed store under the feeder and then pour it back in every day so you don't waste any.

I have a slotted feeder tray I took the top off layed chicken wire over the bottom part put the top back on trimmed the excess off around the edge now they have to peck at the feed instead of raking it out with their beak I haven't seen any on the ground since
