Wasting WAAAAAAY too much feed!!!!!!

Raise the feeder. The bottom where they get the feed from should be slightly higher than the level of their backs so that they have to reach up a bit to get at it.

Some feeders do not have much of an internal lip in the bottom pan. This helps to prevent them from beaking it out. If yours does not you may want to look at some other models to see if you can find one better.

Here's a few pictures of my plastic shoe boxes with 'ski's turned into chicken feeders. Been almost two weeks and 25 chickens using them and the waste has gone to almost nothing. So far, no one has tipped one over.

Put like an ice cream lid under it to collect the feed.
Yeah, and reuse it!

I will try lifting my feeder up a bit. They are a month old now so they are considerably bigger than they were when I started seeing the problem so I will try this tonight. I'm hoping to have them in a tractor in the next couple of weeks and then they can clean up their own scraps!!!

Good luck! :)

I had solved the problem with the hens. 36 chickens eat out of 5 chamber pots. I get them on ebay cracked and cheap. Never lost any feed, 5 years now. You fill it 1/2 way or a bit more.

With my chicks what seems to work the best is the dish in a dish in a dish. So if they fling it, it goes into the bigger dish. I have 9 JG babies (5 weeks) and they do well with the dish dish dish. Sometimes I even turn the center one upside down.

I'm having the waste problem, too, and this is a great idea! Are those bolts w/ washers used for connection?

OMG - I didn't see that one coming. Great idea.

This 1/4 inch plywood modification fixed this feeder. When I ferment the food, almost nothing get wasted.

This is a great idea, too. I was going to make a long trough with plywood and the top piece to have hinges for filling and 1 1/2 inch holes placed 2 inches apart. We have the top metal feeders right now, only not so tall and this might be easier just to add the pieces into the little trough. and also put a cover on the top of ours because it's not very high and they eat from the top as well. BYC community has GREAT ideas!

This is the other picture you were referring to.
I tried to fix my spelling in the original post and deleted the pic by accident
