I see these birds all the time on ground they are after chicken scraps left over.

i live in Oklahoma they seem to have clutsy flight and camouflage against everything..:/

I accidentally stepped on it yesterday right before it got dark not thinking to look on ground bc all of my chickens were already roosting i was going out ti lock everyone up...

Yes i took precautions wore gloves and had it in a box Away from my flock and isolated from everything overnite..it didn't make it overnite. I feeel so bad:(

You probably cant see it well on a red waterer. Heres another photo i tried taking a few days ago of the same kind of bird in above photo.

It's a dirty old regular sparrow. They are everywhere here. They also drop like flies this time of year for some reason. I wouldn't feel bad. It was probably dying before you stepped on it.
I thought it was a little older than a fledging, juvenile.. Robin. Shows what i know.i dont see them anymore after that happened maybe they warned their bird friends not to go in my yard..JOKING!#LOL

I would say a Sparrow as well, here in the UK they seemed to have vanished for a while but lately they are making a comeback.
I remember years ago if you threw bread out all kinds of birds used to swoop down, but now the main ones are Pigeons, Magpies and the odd Blackbird.

On odd occasions I see Great Tits, and I've got a Robin now making an appearance, I live in the suburbs so not likely to see some of the birds that frequent rural areas.

Thanks for replying, oldhenlikesdogs. One of my favorite original egg-sperts!
Unfortunately I'm very familiar with those sparrows. I believe they are house sparrows which are an invasive species. Them along with starlings are a major pest to my birds. Because I use a pole build as a coop they nest and roost in my shed. We do our best to control their numbers and destroy their nests here or else we would have thousands. I find dead ones in all my water buckets this time of year, and some are just weak and sickly. There are definitely better sparrows that aren't such a nuisance that I enjoy.

Oh, and thank you. :)

Starlings also declined here in the UK, well in my area anyway, but recently I had a flock of them around my wild bird feeders, I counted roughly around 20+ after that I removed all the feeders.
Another bird I used to see a lot of was a Thrush, I've seen the odd one here and there, never in my garden though.

I agree... NO way could you have stepped on it if it were in good condition, IMO.

White crowned sparrow's are feed raiders here, early in the season. They seem to have mostly gone now. Most my birds ignore them, but my bantam Ameraucana pullets starting chasing them off finally.

Robins are also more prevalent only at a certain time of year here. The ones we have are much larger than that sparrow.

I think I have a starling that comes back to nest in pole barn every year... we to will be working to remove nests. :he
