I wanted to post this for others since it was a great help to me. My Golden Comet developed water belly where a chickens abdomen ( back side of chicken down low) swells from the liver dumping fluids into it. If left untreated it will eventually kill the chicken.
My chicken started to show signs of this she would just stand in the yard and not move or take a few steps and stop. She would hide in the bushes with her head tucked back into the leaves, pant, and soon her crown started to flop and turn purple. I treated her for egg bound first with no results. When I checked her again I noticed her belly was really swollen with fluid. I couldn’t go to the vet due to covid. I looked up the symptoms and found this wonderful lady who shows you how to drain a chicken for water belly.

I followed her instructions carefully and was able to drain The fluids from my chicken. I did this two days in a row till most of the fluids was drained. When she ran a fever I gave her a soak in a tub in luke warm water for 15 minutes. My chicken was weak so I read that oregano and Turmeric was good for liver problems and healing. I put the fresh oregano and a teaspoon of tumeric in water with plain white rice, a dash of salt, and boiled it. Once cooled I fed to my chicken. Within two days she showed great improvement!

It is good to hear that your hen is feeling better after draining her abdomen. The fluid may accumulate again. But she have more time with you now. My bantam mille fleur d'uccle is 8 years old and she has just developed ascites as well. Yesterday I drained her belly, and today she was more active and eating again. Ascites can occur from heart failure, liver disease, cancer, and egg yolk peritonitis. When I lose her, I will do a necropsy to try and find out what was wrong.

I had three hens all from the same hatch they were all diagnosed with ovarian cysts. Two died and my Moona is the last. I would hate to loose her but I know it will be something I have to deal with every couple of months. I have ordered three new chicks to restock my flock.
