Water Clean, Thaw, and Outside..?

I'm not crazy about buckets especially in the ground! As the level goes down chickens need to lean in further. I can just imagine finding an upsidedown drowned chicken. Plus an open bucket in the ground will get filled with scratched up dirt and bedding. :tongue
They don't care about dirt and bedding in the water, we do. I don't think they will drown either. I have seen a chicken climb, in 1.00 seconds, up a 6 foot tall coil of 2/4" welded wire fencing, about 18" open inside diameter. He was a bad rooster and needed to be isolated. He disagreed. To drown it would need to be a pretty big bucket.

EDIT: Or a well-fed Buff Orpington named Marco Pollo.

Did he climb up but head down?
