Water Clean, Thaw, and Outside..?

I'm not crazy about buckets especially in the ground! As the level goes down chickens need to lean in further. I can just imagine finding an upsidedown drowned chicken. Plus an open bucket in the ground will get filled with scratched up dirt and bedding.

They don't care about dirt and bedding in the water, we do. I don't think they will drown either. I have seen a chicken climb, in 1.00 seconds, up a 6 foot tall coil of 2/4" welded wire fencing, about 18" open inside diameter. He was a bad rooster and needed to be isolated. He disagreed. To drown it would need to be a pretty big bucket.

True. However dirt and bedding kicked up and into their water can breed some nasty health problems. Glad it works for you, it's just not for me .
