Water Freezing

OK, so I live in Virginia and we are having some pretty cold temperatures right now. It hasn't been this cold since before I started raising chicks! Temperatures are dropping down to 16f at night. My girls aren't used to the weather as last years Christmas was 70f! Which, in turn means I'm not used to it. Can anyone recommend a good water heater? I would prefer one that can be used with a plastic waterer but if I have to go and buy a new one for the girls I am willing to!

There are medal water heaters I've got one they work so well for my medal waterer but mine was 50$ little to pricey for some people it was a gift but a there is an article about it on the home page of Back yard chickens it's about using a light bulb from a heat lamp under a medal thing you should check it out

I like the drop in deicer. I use an open water dish so it works like a stock tank deicer.
There are bucket "heaters" that do just that. They HEAT the water to actual hot and even boiling. Not what you would want for sure. Read up on whatever you choose before shelling out the dough.

What kind of waterer are you using?

I use rubber livestock bowls and run heat over my water dish..Still freezes so I refill four times a day..

The quickest, easiest, cheapest way to warm a plastic waterer during the day is a cookie tin water warmer. You will still need to bring the water in at night because the warmer won't keep the water from freezing overnight at temps into the teens.

They are very easy and fun to make and work very well. No, they will not melt the plastic pan on the waterer.

I use a metal warmer with a metal fountain. I bought it about 5 years ago & it sure doesn't work as well as the one I bought 25 years ago. It tends to freeze in the top below 10 degrees & had a thin layer of ice in the bowl at 4 the other night. They drank it anyway, but it is a pain right now. I have to bring it in & run warm water over it to open it to fill. Can't wait until in is -2 this weekend! Thankfully it works pretty well with normal winter temperatures.
