the merchants who sell the WH thermostats here where I am have 2 different styles our mains are available in 2 different voltages 115 and 208-240 kina depends on the town you are in the T-stat made for 115 volts only has 2 screws ie. 1 pole or 1 leg ,the one made for 220 volts has 4 screws ie 2 poles or legs both legs of the main are broken or interupted on this model most of the homade incy I have seen built use the single pole type.

Here are some pictures to help you. What you want is a bottom thermostat. Most have 2 screws.

Print that pic out a take it to your hardware store.

Here are some other variations on it beside the top thermostat... You do not want a top thermostat, they cost more an may or may not work for you....

Water heater thermostats are only used because they are easy to get.
If you have to order a thermostat online I would just go ahead an get a wafer thermostat. They cost a little more but they work well.

Aint that an Oven thermostat??? Dont think I would try that.

I have been playing with a toaster oven stat it is actuaaly closer then the 3-4 WH t-stats I have tried I think in the UK a water heater is going to be a boiler

How would the wafer thermostat be controlled? I cant see any numbers like 90-150 F.

How would you connect it to the bulb?
Does anyone have a spare thermostat?

Thanks,

It has 2 screws on it an hooks up just like the water heater thermostat. It has no numbers on it so you just adjust the L bar till your thermometer says what you want it to say.

That is a big part of it but you also cant just go to the hardware store an pic up a wafer thermostat or parts for it.

But yes the top thermostat is about 3 times the cost of the bottom thermostat. An some are set to a higher temp range.
