Water Question

I've been using house water to water my chickens. Well after nearly 3 years of hauling water out to their coop, I'm kind of done with it. I'd run a hose out to them but it's at the furthest point in my yard from my out side house water bib. However, it occurred to me that the chickens are always flipping dirt and stuff into the water pan so maybe it would be OK to use the secondary non culinary water to water them. I've already got a hose running out to the coop to water the tree I planted in their pen.

Any thoughts?

What do you mean by secondary non-culinary? That it didn't go through a water filtration system (well water)?

Basically it's irrigation water.

The chickens won't care. As long as it isn't stagnant I would think it would be just fine. i have watched my birds drink out of mud puddles, old buckets and just about anything that holds even a drop of water.

That or Collect Rain water from the coop roof and use that.

Thanks. I'd collect rain water from the roof but here in Utah it doesn't really rain enough to make that work. That's why we have secondary water (aka Irrigation water) I actually get to pay each year for 1/3 acre of water from the irrigation company. It's way cheeper than using house water to water the yard and gardens so I don't mind so much.

I would get Chicken water nipples. They are the best, clean way to give water to chickens. I think your water is just fine. The water we use for my chickens has sodium in it, and they are fine. Another way to keep the water clean is by using ACV.

I realize this is an old thread....but does using collected rain water from a coop's roof or a house roof require a filtration system before it gets to the chickens?

I wouldn't.

But usually a screen is on the top of the barrel to keep stuff from falling in.

And... note what kind of a roof you have. Asphalt shingles might put nasty something into the water... not sure....
