Water risks for chickens

The risk I'm conerned about his a horse water trough that the chickens would have access to when they free range.
Suggestions to make the horse water trough "chicken safe?"

We put a 2x6, with the 6 inch wide side up in our horse water trough to cut down on the number of floaters. Before using the board we'd pull out a dead mouse, small birds at least once a week. Since installing the board we seldom have any floaters. But I have no experience if this would help chickens, but it couldn't hurt.

can anyone offer some advice?
when the chickens have a chance to free range they will have access to a horse water trough. Is there anythign we can do so this is not a hazzard for them?

I have a trough for my goats and the chickens drink out of it, even though they have several waterers made for chickens! Well we had 2 chickens and a guinea drown in the water through. My DH came up with the idea to put some cinder (SP) blocks in the trough. I washed them off and put them down in the water vertically. Now when someone falls in they can get their footing on the cinder blocks and are able to jump out, instead of drowning. I only fill the trough about 3 inches over the blocks. For a long trough you may want to set 2-3 blocks in it. Be sure to set them vertical so they are like 14 inches high. Hope this helps you. We've been using this for over a year now and so far have had NO Drownings!!!
