So how long do you process water to make a jar seal and do you use tap water with chlorine or do you can unchlorinated water? Interesting thought. It wasnt something that has occured to me and sure solve the problem of water aquiring that nasty taste when it sits in plastic just a bit too long. When it comes time to use those jars for canning instead of water storage then the water in the jars can go into the canner for water bathing. Clean simple no waste and cheap. I like it.
If it makes you feel any better look at the bright side. You are waiting in the warm comfort of your home while someone else is freezing their butt off fixing the problem. I have a well and back in 2000 with 22" of snow on the ground my pump which is 250' in the ground went south. Did I mention that it was 1 degree outside? A couple of hour job took about all day due to the conditions and honestly that was the coldest that I've been in all of my life. I'm just thankful that I had the knowledge to do it myself(with a helper of coarse) and save the $1200.00 to $1500.00(or more due to conditions) that it would have cost to pay someone to do it for me. Being a licensed plumber and electrician it would have been kinda of embarrassing not to do it myself. I still love my well water though!!!
It is frustrating though when a utility knows there is going to be an interruption and doesn't notify their customers. I am on the automated call list for the power company due to having incubators and brooders so that I can prepare my generator if i need to.
During the winter when there is a power outage the DW and I make plenty of hot coffee and pastries for the crews at night. Nothing like the smiles on their wind chapped faces when we show up.

I started canning water because I had tons of jars sitting empty on the basement shelves and thought - why not have something in them if they're taking up all this space? I didn't like the water sitting in plastic either and the only expense to my storage solution are the jar lids. I just canned them in a water bath for 10 minutes (quart jars) and let them seal like any other canning product. As far as chlorinated water - I don't know. I have well water so I never thought about that. Maybe you can go fill some plastic jugs at someone's house who has well water?
I did do some quarts that I called "sterilized". The jars were boiled before filling and the water bath was processed about 20 minutes. I don't know if it's "sterile", but I call it that. Would be a good first aid wound wash, etc.
Guess what we just got in the mailbox today... A letter from the water company. First thought that came to me was a very belated warning of shut-off. Second thought was an apology for not having water. In all actuality, it was a letter requesting donations.
Lol. They did that to our neighbors. The had to run a line through our neighborhood, and dug up everyone's yards on the other side of the street. Unfortunately, it's a dead-end street, so we were often caught up waiting on them. They did, however, try to restore things as best they could.
we have waterwells where i live... my sister was in the middle of dying her hair oneday when we lost electricity... we had to call my best friend in the next town so my sister can go rinse the dye out of her hair... talk about luck
