Water suggestions please!

I just graduated from the cutsy plastic waterer to a 2 gallon galvanized pail...the cover pushes down around the sides and the water comes out of a small hole...the only problem is the water comes out and goes everywhere!!!! It doesn't stop until it is at the rim! I had to dump ALL the wood shaves today, the water had seeped through out! I really like the plastic one, with the red screw on base and could buy it bigger, but wonder how it will do in the winter, cause it wouldn't be heated? Should I buy two and rotate them...

Does anyone have any experience with the galvanized waterer? Is mine defective? Should the water go right to the top of the drinking dish part?

Mine only goes about 3/4 of the way up , but it is also 20 years old . Personally i don't think they should go all the way to the top . Could be defective!?

Mine is also older and did the same thing yours is doing. I realized that the handle was loose, therefore air was getting in and breaking the seal from the top. I used JB Weld over the holes by the handle and it has worked perfectly since then.

We got a galvanized waterer this past spring,my daughters made HUGE mess with it everytime they filled it, and it was constantly out of water until we realized they were 'closing it' wrong.............Also, it has to be on a very level surface (more so than red plastic ones) or it will run itself dry.(With water only at the rim.) We set ours on a peice of board. Helps to keep water cleaner, too.
They made a 3-gal size, which does take longer to freeze. We've used them for several years, don't know how that metal one is gonna take the winter.

We graduated (ha! I'd love to have a huge red plastic one!) from the red plastic to the metal. I found out, on this site as a matter of fact, that I had been putting the metal lid back on wrong. It's got to hook into the nobby thingie that sticks out and then lock. Hope my technical language has not intimidated you.

I have a galvanized waterer and don't have any trouble. It fills about 2/3 full. Check the lever that comes in and out (I don't know what it is called)

It may be stuck. I also have mine leveled and sitting up on wood on top of bricks to help keep it clean. The piece of wood is just the right size to fit under the waterer without getting in the way for the girls.

All you should have to do is keep it level. Mine fills right to the lip. I keep it on a milk crate. I'll never go back to plastic. Seems the horses have radar when it comes to plastic feeders and waters and always step on them.
