Water tight outside nest lid

do you mind if i ask why you use bins in the boxs?

I saw the idea here-there was a big thread of nest box ideas. The advantages are that it's super easy to gather eggs (no reaching in, worrying about smacking an egg on the doorway on the way out, etc-just slide the bin out, take out the eggs, slide it back in) and when the time comes, easy to clean the bins. The bedding stays in the bins-when we open the door, there's no worry about bedding falling out and getting into the hinge area of the door, making it hard to close. We made the inside part so that the lip of the boxes is supported like this:

The bins fit tightly along the sides. Not so much on the back, as you can see in the outside view picture. Our measurements were for our original interior nest box idea and we forgot to alter them for the new plans. If it becomes an issue I'll just set pieces of 2 x 4 in behind the boxes and we can take them out before sliding the box. Right now we just make sure to push the bins all the way in after we collect eggs.
