another thing you can do is use a cookie tin top and put the wterer in that. I have also used a piece of shelve liner under the water to stop them from kicking shaving in the water
I agree with monarc, the bedding does wick the water out of the bases. You definitely need to raise it up on something.
You can google quail waterer or quail water base and find many listings. Or your local feed store should be able to order them for you.
The water bottles are very easy to use, I trained my 3-4 month old jumbos how to use them in just a few minutes. I just squeezed the bottle so some drops fell out, and they were hooked! It probably helped that they had run out of water overnight, and it was about 10 or 11 am when I had gone out there, so they were pretty thirsty! But they catch on to the water bottles very quickly. Just be sure, if you use them, that you get a good quality water bottle. Some of the cheaper ones (like the ones walmart carries
) drip constantly, no matter what you do. Kind of defeats the purpose there.
Yeah I Googled around quite a bit and it seems the main one sold commercially is the one I already have. I was hoping there were some other design ideas.
I definitely like the rabbit water bottle idea and went and picked one up but since I have the chicks in a huge plastic tote I need to figure out a way to mount the water bottle to the side somehow.
Here's a pic of the one I have that was soaking the pine bedding:
There's also a water piece that attaches to a "people" water bottle or drink bottle...it then attaches to the side of your pen...i think it's intended for small pens and show pens...

You can take a drill and put a hole on each side of the corner of the tote. Then just hook the wire that comes with the bottle into these holes and that should do it. I actually had to rig mine up, come to think of it, for the guinea pigs that are in a plastic tote. I just did this (above) and took a piece of wire that loops around the spout of the bottle and hooks to the wire that comes with the bottle. That should hold it
