what is the best waterer for chickens i have 13 chickens 1 rooster 2 have died i cleaned out their water thing today and filled it back up about 2 hours ago i went out again to check it 2 hours later it hadnt put out any water it wasnt clogged up or anything just doesnt like to work right so what would be the best to use that can be filled and not have to be checked every 5 minutes to make sure its putting out water?

I use buckets and rubber pans for watering. I put out multiple sources all over the yard, and in their run, and shed.

I made a nipple waterer. Lasts for days, no dirty water. It's the white bucket.

What type waterer are you using? How old are your birds? What greeds? Are you sure they died from not havin water? How are the other birds actin? How hot is it where you live? Do they have access to cool, shade, dust baths etc?

The reason i ask is this... we decided we wanted use nipple waterers. So when the chicks were bout a week old we made them... liter soda bottles with screw on nipple tops. We left in the reg drinker we had been usin to make sure they were gettin water still while they learned to use the nipple waterers. Two days later the chicks were peckin the heck out of the new bottles.. but the bottles were still full to the gills. So what we didn't think about was the vacuum.... and it not lettin water flow from the nipples. Once we poked holes in the liter bottle all was fine amd the chicks all started usin the nipple waterers just fine. So we knew to make a largeish hole in the lid of the five gallon nipple water bucket we made when we sized up.

Eta.. i see the watereer you are usin... is the hole that is on the bottom side of the bottle open? It is only a small hole and that is fine. Do not make it larger! Are you puttin the hole on the lowest side how it sits? It should run out and if put the hole on the low side the tray it won't keep overflowing. Did you take that black cap that is coverin the hole at the bottom of the bottle off and screw it up on that nub thinger that is higher on the bottle? The nub thinger is there so you dont lose the cap. The cap is used for when you are filling the bottle so it doesnt all run out. But when you get the bottle situated in the tray you need take it off the bottom nub and put it on the higher nub. Then it should work right....

Here is a video showin how do it....

Yes i have done that i think it uses the lid to allow or prevent water from coming out but to much the water just pours out to little no water comes out i guess i just gotta keep messing with it until i find the perfect turn on the lid. Also they are supposed to start laying next month and i live in Kentucky sometimes the high is 75-80 sometimes goes up to 90s just really depends they dont really have no dust well ill inclose a pic. Also its shady in the morning /afternoon but later in the day the only shade they have is inside their coop which is kind of an enclosed house but they only enter it at night.

Is there a black band up in the lid? It helps to allow some air in the bottle but not a lot. My mister tightens ours down and he doesn't use hulk strength but it is pretty snug. I would fiddle with tight and loose the top to get the right amount of flow. If all else fails you can use pans for water until you get the bottle doin right too. That way at least they have access to water.

It may be a good idea to put a tarp up over part of the run for daytime heat shade also. We also put a few nice sized cut limbs in the run and the cluckers love to sit under it. Even though their run is pretty shady all day. Dust bathing helps keep them cool also. How big is that run? It looks kinda small in the pics but maybe we just can't see all of it? If you can run a fan out that may help too. The temps may not be miserable hot but in ky you get the humid also. That makes a difference. We lived in ky for many years. :).

Your coop and run look way too small for that many chickens. Overcrowding could lead to health problems and fighting. You need about 4 sq ft of coop space and 10 sq ft of run space per chicken. I see on another post you got it at TSC and I'm guessing it's this one?

When they say up to # chickens, that high number is for bantams. For large fowl they usually only hold half that, or less. With the dimensions given (run about 9x5 and coop looks about 3x5) that coop really should only hold 4 large chickens.

As for the waterer, try adjusting the lid like someone said. Too tight and nothing, too loose and it'll all pour out. If you can't get it working then at least put out a pan of water until you can get a working waterer.
