I use nipples in the bottom of a 5gal pail. It's mounted outside, the coop is open 24/7 so there is no food or water inside. For winter I have a setup with two buckets and heat tape wrapped around the bottom of the inner bucket. So far it is working great.

I vote for both cups and nipples. We use 5 gallon buckets with nipples on the bottom and cups around the sides. That way the chicks can drink from the nipples and the larger birds drink from the cups. They are hung from a chain on S hooks and we adjust them up and down depending what size birds we have in the coop. Too clean the cups just get a small brush, Works great.
Can you email me a picture of your water set up on your 5 gallon bucket, as well as how high it is off the ground? What did you use for your baby chicks in the brooder? Did you just use a dish at 1st? I am revamping, and bought 10 nipples and was going to put 3-4 in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket for my chickens. I am thinking on using this system for my 6 layers, and than if I can get it down, use it for when I do batches of 25 meat birds... Thanks....

Watering cups have been a life saver! I used the ridiculous red and white waterer from TSC that you have to flip upside down to fill everyday for a year. Now I have 4 watering cups attached to a 5 gallon pickle bucket. I was able to find the watering cups on ebay 4 cups for $11.95 with free shipping, and I was able to get a free food grade pickle bucket with lid from a local cafe. They were extremely easy to install, less than 10mins start to finish and having been preforming perfectly! My chickens learned how to drink from them right away. I removed there old waterer and they were triggering the yellow plunger for water in no time. I would absolutely recommend these to anyone looking to water some chickens and is tired of having to do so everyday. The water stays clean, last for days, and does not ever spill in our coop.
