WATERFOWL EGG SWAP

The trick with Muscovy is whether they're raised up from babies with mallard-type ducks. If you brood them all together the Muscovy will generally consider themselves to be just like the other ducks and will most likely breed with them. I'm careful to raise my Muscovy separate from the mallard-types and that causes my Muscovy to hold themselves separate from what they seem to consider "inferior ducks" lol!

It's great for me because once they're fully feathered they can run with all the mallard-type ducks and I don't have to worry about separating them for breeding. It's quite unusual that the mallard drakes will attempt to breed with the Muscovy girls but it could happen in some flocks, those girls can beat up on the other ducks pretty well if they get tweaked so my mallard drakes keep clear of them.

Okay so generally speaking just because you let different breeds run together doesn't mean they will interbreed? Or is that just for Muscovies?

just the muscovy. They do hold themselves apart in the same way my geese do. But you'll need to watch your mallard boys... they may or may not.

Any breeds similar in size will cross:

Calls, mallards, black east indies

Mallards, runners, rouens, swedes, anconas, etc.

Muscovies, pekins, rouens, swedes, khakis, etc.

Will different sizes cross? Like Anconas and calls?

I'm getting my flock of Anconas later this month (got about 25 at my friends house) and I will be housing them with the calls while we build the ancona pen. Might be a couple weeks.

Calls are typically too small to cross with anything bigger than a mallard, but it may be possible. I have my calls separate more for their safety than anything else. My runners suffocated 1 of my calls in the night pile up last winter.

Okay, good to know thanks!

The Anconas are all under 3 months so I guess I don't have to worry about the breeding part anyways. They won't be in there long enough.

CURRENT OFFER from learycow

MINE on the Sebbie eggs! I also can wait :)

Offer:
4 Welsh Harlequin (show and breeder quality, 5 golds and 1 silver with a silver drake) testing fertility now and ready once confirmed. MAY be crossed with muscovy as my drake escaped the muscovy pen but the muscovy don't seem to be breeding just yet. I just don't want there to be any surprises

or

6 mixed chicken eggs. Hens are black and blue copper marans and white leghorn over a leghorn/lakenvelder cross rooster. Also have these in the bator to confirm fertility but I've seen the roo doing "his thing"

Okay question. This isn't like a swap between two people? For instance, I have calls, I claim someone's eggs, send them calls and they send me theirs.

It's more: I claim someone's offer, they send me eggs, someone else claims my offer, I send them eggs?

Just trying to clarify.
