I really want a pair of swans. They can eat my nosy neighbors.

Purina Flock Raiser is what I feed my geese. I don't mix fowl in pens together so I don't know the results of layer feed but keep in mind layer feed is formulated for laying hens - omnivores. It is not formulated for geese - herbivores.

LV426 - you'll have to remind me in 2yrs when our girl starts laying.

Maybe after we sell some chicks at Milton this weekend I can order some Mazuri.

Ok so I went on a search to find out if swans can be fed poultry feed. The general consensus of the breeders was pretty negative. Almost every one of them recommended the Mazuri Waterfowl. However I did express the cost of feeding Mazuri and the breeders also said they use whole wheat, oats, and whole alfalfa to cut the Mazuri and reduce cost. Now mind you these are breeders and most of these did not have a large free range area or had a lot of swans that couldn't be supported by the environment they were kept in so they had to be supplemented with feed. So Mazuri was what they recommended but then with the wheat and oats and alfalfa. They also said you can feed them greens and clover clippings as well as some lettuces like romaine and leaf and also vegetable leavings like peelings and such from your dinner scraps.

There was one place that feeds theirs poultry pellets mixed with corn and wheat but their birds spent a majority foraging for their own food in a lake.

last week, I just bought 2 Australian Black Swans
and they guy that I bought them from said that chick starter feed was fine and not to feed very much corn
I buy the starter feed, 24% from Tractor Supply
they don't have any thing that is just for waterfowl

Hi, Welcome by the way!

I checked tractor supply place and my local feedstore for waterfowl starter... BOTH told me to just use the chick feed I already have it was fine (for ducks). I do not have swans so unsure.

My feedstore however said they could get some foods aimed to waterfowl for me... they carry purina brand feeds.

Try to search out a smaller feed store in your area... they are more willing to search for you and order if needed then from a place like Tracor Supplu Company.

Don't believe them abouit the chick starter - my Big R people kept telling me to feed them meat bird starter! I used Flock Raiser - never knew they HAD medicated, but now one of the feed stores in town carries Game Bird Maintenance and game Bird Breeder - so I've switched over to that. Made by Purina.

Can they have the flock and game bird feed so young? I know they have those at the feedstore... but nothing for starter?

I have ducklings due today and I would like to make sure I don't give them something they shouldn't have?! Of course non-medicated.
