Waterfowl Only Egg Swap!

Cayuga's aren't flyers but they're beautiful on the water - slow land-movers over all. They don't even attempt to use their wings as far as I can tell

Will they brood their own eggs? And are they good foragers?

Sorry for all the questions...I just like to know what I'm getting myself into. And I like getting experienced info straight from the "horse's mouth" so to speak.

No problem, shelleyb1969! I wrote an informational article for my website about Cayuga's: http://2mooses.weebly.com/about-cayuga-ducks.html

Yes
, they do tend to brood their own eggs. They're actually wonderful mothers but each bird is individual (as I'm sure you know

). They are good foragers as well, but they like to stick close to home and don't roam as far afield as the Runners do... those Runners get all sidetracked with their bills in the dirt and next thing they know thier in timbucktoo! LOL!

People ask me that all the time. I dunno

... My chicken eggs are huge too... folks donate their used egg cartons but I give them to another farmer because so many mine are way too big to fit in the extra large. I feed Southern States Gamebird and mix in some flaxseed and BOSS. Nothing fancy. They freerange on only 2 acres and have access to about 12 kiddie pools.

Right now the poor babies are in a 40x40 breeding pen and I have to pick their greens for them...

ETA: I totally forgot that everyone gets Rooster Booster once a month in their water and every day for the first month for babies. Maybe that's got something to do with egg size? I dunno...

Thanks Farmrgirl! Let me stew on it a few minutes...if someone else takes your eggs, then maybe next time for me. I have Welsh Harlequins, and they are EXCELLENT foragers...but neither of my hens has gone broody and they're a year old now.

I really don't want to brood ducklings if I can help it. Plus, I have my Harlequin trio for sale at the moment...my drake has become super aggressive towards my chickens.

I have WH too and you're right... they are very good foragers and wanderers too! My lone little WH girl is broody now and is very dedicated to her nest.

gosh! my chickens run the barnyard! (except for the geese and my Muscovy drake). I wish some of my ducks would show a little grit and stop letting the chickens boss them all over the place

I'd take your trio if you were closer.
