Good ideas already given, but if you want to continue using your plastic gallon waterers you can take a dremel tool or something else and grind out the threads from the inside of the base where the jug screws on. Then the jug will just slide into the base. Can't turn it upside down without the bottom falling off but if you hold it until you set it down it will work fine.
