I look for a melon with a stem end that looks as if it may have matured and started to dry up. That coupled with a good solid thump and a rich color to the melon are my criteria.

Yep

The problem with the first one was that they only had seedless. I actually got the best one I think. They were only a buck too, but there wasn't very many and it was a small store.

My watermelon from the neighbor is great. I thumped till I heard my sound.

My stepdad would always send me to pick out the watermelons. He said I always picked the best tasting ones.
 
Yes a good dried up stem, a big yellow spot indicating it has layed on the ground the right amount of time. I knock on it like your knocking on a door, should have a good deep sound not hollow indicating more rind and a young unripened melon. Good skin color is also an indicator. My DW uses the salt thing I don't salt on a sweet melon defeats the purpose IMHO LOL. and cold melon is the best.
