i dont know how (seeing as they've never been outside, no other chickens have been inside and im forever cleaning the brooder) but my 3 and 4 week old chicks seem to be suffering with cocci. theres tell tale signs of watery brown poo in the brooder and a few not so happy looking chicks

so i have esb-3 to treat them with........but theres no dosage for chicks?????? should i use a quater of the adult dose? a fifth? half??

(its normally 1 capsual per 1L water for adult chickens..)

This may just be a bump up for your post, BUT when I dosed my chicks I used Corid and the dosage was the same. I think you can search on here and find lots of references, but I had no trouble with that dose. (it eludes me what dose it was and is NOT on the bottle). Are you sure it is Cocci though? When I had that, I could see blood-tinged poo, not liquid brown. Maybe your feed needs to be adjusted, add grit? Vitamins? Electrolytes? It is so hard to diagnose poo! Good luck with it, I know it is frustrating. HenZ

hi henz, thanks for the post, im pretty sure its cocci, have dealt with it before (last year with new chickens) but never with chicks;

they dont have grit at the moment but are still on starter crumbles so didnt think they'd need it? ive added a bit of acv in the water but have no electrolytes.....would sugar in the water help?

i have about 60 chicks at the mo and its only this brooder with the poop problem. am being very cautious, making sure i handle these guys AFTER all the others to prevent spreading etc.

I have never seen watery brown pooh for coxi either. The telltale sign is blood in the pooh. Like the above poster I use Corid. It is amprolium 9.6%. The dosage is 1/3 tsp in 1 gal of water. Coxi is a parasite and wormers will also cure it. Do you have any wormers around you could try?

Are you using medicated feed? This should prevent coxi, but not always. I feed my chicks chopped apples and I think sometimes they can get it from things like that. If the apples have been on the ground....

You might try giving them some hard boiled eggs and plain rice or cooked oats. The protein is good for them if they are under the weather and the rice or oats should firm up their pooh.

As for the electrolytes, you can use a little sugar in their water, but personally I don't use processed sugars so I don't give it to my birds either. I use 1 Tbs honey in a quart water and vitamins and acv as well. (all together)

I am not familiar with esb-3, so I am not much help there.

Good luck
Sherry
