hello we had a terrible time when a dog came into our compound and killed one chicken and grabbed another one and took her feathers out. She went in to shock and we brought her inside and gave her rescue remedy etc.
Two weeks on she has developed a very watery explosive diarrhoea. I looked at the chicken poop online pictures and it looks like she is just passing a bit of food and the rest looks like water. It explode from her 3 or 4 times a day.
She is drinking a lot now and still eating but is very weak and losing condition and weight. I have tried putting a bit of maple syrup in her water with a bit of salt tiny tiny amounts and tried all the natural stuff I can. She doesn't eat much fibre now but likes white bread and a few seeds but probably not eating too much.
I feel If i can give her something to stop the diarrhoea then we might be able to get on track.
There is no visible sign of injury and other that a few feathers missing she is 'okay'.
please help I just got her she's a lovely barred rock and quite young. I'll do anything at this stage
thank you community

Hi

Welcome To BYC

Where are you located?
What do you normally feed? (Commercial feed, homemade mixture, etc.)
You mention that she is quite young - how young?
Can you post some photos?

For some reason I feel like the maple syrup and salt would contribute to the diarrhea, so you may want to leave those off. (Molasses and some sugars, as well as certain salts can have a laxative effect in chickens).

If you have poultry vitamins offer those instead (Poultry Nutri-Drench, Poultry Cell, etc.). Offer her her normal feed, you can give it wet and add in some chopped egg, tuna, mackerel or meat for protein. White bread and seeds can make a fine treat in very small quantities, but are not nutritionally dense enough to give her what she needs.

Hi Thank you for taking the time to respond it's most heartening after being told to give up.
I live near Wellington in new Zealand. there is a lack of avarian vets so I just try to work things out myself.
I read lots of blogs about giving chickens a type of electrolyte mix but I have ceased this now and offering plain water. I agree about the bread. I have bought some mince and she ate a good table spoon of this this am. Is it okay to keep feeding just mince? She is being super fussy atm! Hence the bread. I have tried mushed up pellets but she won't even look at them.
I will mix up a little meat now with other food and see if I can tempt her with that.
I've given her a nutri drop one mil.
Fingers crossed. She is just so tired and has little bouts of energy but then has to have a lie down. She is around 6 months old
thank you again

LOL I had to look up "mince" - if it's a meat mixture I think it would be fine to add to her food, I'm sure it would be better than bread

She is 6months old? Has she started laying eggs?

It's possible, even if she had no cuts/puncture wounds from the dog attack, she may have been squeezed and suffered some internal damage. Do the best you can to get her to eat and stay hydrated.

Keep us posted.

Hi I think she is improving but still gets tired. I'll keep you up to date. I think you are right about putting the sugar and pinch of salt in the water it causing a diuretic effect. I read so many blogs to do this as it was to keep the electrolytes up. But I'm sure that was keeping her with the diarrhoea.
thanks and I'll post you an update the good news is she is still going after 3 weeks so I have hope

There's nothing wrong with giving a little sugar/salt (electrolyte) solution when a bird is suffering from shock, heat distress, etc. A little bit is good, too much can have the opposite effect.

Please keep us posted on her progress.

I think this might be my first chicken success story. She is back up with the girls and got onto the roost tonight so I consider that a victory. thank you so much for your help I think everything is going to be okay.
So if you chicken get's attacked by a dog here is all the advice from various sources I got
Isolate to house or quiet spot in darkened area and keep still and quiet for 24 hours.
Administer some rescue remedy to back of neck so it goes in sub cutaneioulsy and also a couple of drops in the water.
keep the rescue remedy going for as long as there is signs of shock.
Keep fluids up for first 24 hour especially
i mil of chicken drops ( vitamins minerals ) is helpful if chicken is not eating much.
Start back on food when they want to eat but don't change the diet too much instead add a wee treat component like cheese or ground beef if they don't want to eat.
I had my chicken inside for a couple of weeks but you need to gauge the time depending on how they react
Good luck! and thank you

So glad I found this thread. I have a 10 month old little lady Ethel that was dropped by a hawk some weeks back. There were no signs of external injury or anything that I could see and she was normal after they all got over the initial shock. She stopped lying with her friends at night soon after and was getting picked on by one of my brattier girls. She developed diarrhea that I noticed four days ago and is really weak. I brought her in, and she’s eating and drinking just fine. Don’t see any signs of worms, mites etc and her eyes are clear and alert. She will walk to me for food but she doesn’t walk for long without getting tired and lying down. Trying to get a handle on the diarrhea, I just got poultry drench and will try that but any advice would be great.
