My 9 month old Crested Cream Legbar hen was feisty and fun! She is the smallest in in my little flock of five, but she has the biggest personality. She went from feisty and fun to lethargic and lonely. She had watery diarrhea, and I was afraid she had a parasite, so I paid $130 for a fecal sample to be analyzed. Results came back negative.

No girardia or parasites, so I reached out to an online vet at Just Answer. He gave me some ideas for an antibiotic, and I have purchased two: Amtyl and Doxy-Tyl tablets.

Has ANYONE had success with either of these antibiotics?

I adore this little hen, and am hoping these medications will help her.

It’s excellent that you got a fecal test done to rule out parasites. Broad-spectrum antibiotics like Doxy-Tyl (doxycycline + tylosin) and Amtyl (amoxicillin + tylosin) can treat bacterial infections, particularly those that affect poultry's digestive and respiratory systems. Although the reason for her problems will determine how well she responds to treatment, some chicken keepers have found success using them to treat bacterial enteritis or other ailments. To support her gut health while taking antibiotics, make sure she's drinking enough water, and if you haven't already, think about giving her a vitamin boost or probiotics. She might require a different strategy if she doesn't get well in a few days or if things go worse. I hope she gets better soon! Tell me how she is doing, please.

Thank you!! NutriDrench has been AMAZING for her, and she is drinking water that has been boosted with electrolytes. I am making her some feed mash with the electrolyte water, and she does enjoy a few bites of a scrambled egg, and a few nibbles of plain yogurt. I'm working hard to help her. She is precious to me, and I will definitely let you know how she progresses.

Since Amtyl targets a wide variety of germs that may be causing her symptoms, I advise starting with it. This antibiotic is a suitable initial choice since her lethargy and watery diarrhea point to a bacterial illness. Supporting her with easily digested foods and drinks will allow her to be nourished and hydrated while taking the medication. Over the next several days, you can monitor her to see if the drug is helping or if you need to move to another antibiotic, such as Doxy-Tyl.

Can you be a bit more specific about her symptoms?

When was her last egg, is her crop emptying, she's lethargic, is she eating/drinking on her own, what do you feed including treats?

How much and how often are you giving the poultry nutri-drench? This in itself if given for several days can often cause loose poop.

Photos of your Pullet and her poop may be helpful.

The online vet suggested antibiotics - what illness or infection did he diagnose?
