Marlinchaser-Bonfire night is Nov 5th. A chap called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament in 1606, but got caught and executed in a rather unpleasant way. It became the custom to celebrate this event by making a bonfire and letting off fireworks. An effigy of Mr Fawkes is burned on the fire. Have a look at Wikipedia-it gives a detailed and interesting explanation.
Silkie chicken- my birds are 2 years old and have laid most days since I had them. I am amazed at how productive they are.
Mdbucks-The friend who gave me the hens was going on holiday and wanted to rehome them instead of culling them. She did not mention egg quality, just that they were good layers. She did not want anything for them. I did offer, but she refused payment. Anyway the eggs are much better now. Before, I had to boil them for 15 minutes to get the whites to set.
Does anyone know of any other reason why they should improve? Weather? Daylight hours?
