Watery eye + lice, mites, worms or something like that around her eye

Hi again,

Just thought I would post a really quick update. It's been 3 hrs since I last checked my bantam and there seems to be an improvement. Her eye is no longer watery, looks almost normal again but there is some crusting around the eye lid. She was up and eating and walking about so I think she's happy - phew.

I think she will get better from here.

I'm back again - Thought I would leave you another update - my little bantam seemed better this morning but by late afternoon her eye was closed again and looking watery when she opens it.

I rang about 6 vets and all gave me different advice but none of them wanted to see her because they don't look after birds.

Then I did some more research on the net and found an Avian specialist and there's one locally so I'm going to take her there tomorrow for a check up just to be on the safe side.

I read some scary things about birds with eye infections so I don't want to take any chances. I think what's happened is that she has scratched her eye with her claw to relieve the itch from the lice and it's caused a bacterial infection in the eye.

Fingers crossed she'll be ok.

Hi all

Took my little bantam to the Avian specialist this afternoon and it turns out that she has
fowl pox which is a viral disease which is spread by the bites of mosquitoes.

In addition to her watery eye she has a crustly looking small lump on her eye lid and this is how the specialist diagnosed her.

I explained to the specialist that she had what I thought was lice around her eye but he didn't seem to think that was normal and said it was probably just a coincidence as a secondary thing. He gave her a good check over and said even though her eye is watery, there was no infection and she will recover ok. He couldn't find any signs of lice and he said other than that she seems to be in good health.

He even checked her poo and said it looked great - hehe.

It's been raining non stop for weeks here and there are a LOT of mosquitoes around. We bought some shade cloth this afternoon for the chook shed windows so that should help keep them out. We'll also take other measures to ensure the mossies stay clear.

Thanks to everyone for your concern and help, it's most appreciated and I feel sooooo much better now.

Hello again,

Thought I would give you a final update. My little bantam's eye has been wide open now for 2 days. It's no longer watery, the swelling around her eye lid has gone down a lot and almost looks normal again. The little crusty lump has also reduced in size and hardly noticeable.

I think another few days and she'll be completely back to normal - just in time for arrival of her chicks which are due to hatch on Saturday

I just went through a similar thing with my Auracana pullet. We went to see the vet yesterday and thank the lord she only had an ulcer on her eye. I have her in the house and hubby and I doctor her with Chloramphenicol ointment and pain ointment three times a day. I was so pleased he sent us home with pain medicine, her eye looked like it was very painful! Bless our vets! My chickens are part of our family , just like the parrots and the dogs.

I was just reading about VetRx & it can be used orally, in eyes & topically. I use it for the rooster combs for healing of little pinches they give each other & find it easy to use in a small spray bottle. It is useful for a number of things like frostbite on combs, eye worm, mites/lice, respiratory, etc. It is sold online by poultry suppliers, Ebay & other online places; just do an internet search.
