You know how Nature abhors a vacuum?
The previous owners of my farmette left me a perfectly nice henhouse.
After 5 years I am itching to fill it.
This is The Summer of the Chicken for me.
As soon as I can get some help replacing the fencing for the yard attached to the coop I'll be posting back here looking for some laying hens. No peeps for me, I want pullets.
Knowing nothing except I want "purty" ones, so far my picks for breed are:
Barred Plymouth Rock
Dominique
Partridge Chantecler
Buckeye
Wyandotte
Brahma
I want a hen that is cold-hardy (pea-comb would be best), social and can free range or spend some time confined.
Since I want a maximum of 6 hens I'll have to roll the dice or see what's available in my area.
Soon I hope!
A nieghbor is also putting in a coop and will get his hens from the Lowell Livestock auction. Does anyone here know if they have a selection of breeds or just the routine Leghorns?
