Ways to find good homes for boys from hatch?

I want to be able to eat my own roosters. Every time I set eggs in the incubator I say " Ok, this time any boy that hatches we will eat." I end up selling them or giving them away. I know they will get eaten eventually. I keep watching videos on how to do it. I think I can cull, I know I can feather. Dont know if I can clean it. I'm a work in progress. Anyway, I agree that if you eat your own at least you know they had a good life right up to the end.

IMHO if you want control of the birds you hatch then you have to keep them. Can't keep them? Then you have no right to say what happens to them when they leave your house

nothing wrong with eating them, i personally couldn't kill or eat my own even if they where really mean, maybe if i had hundreds, but my birds are like pets it something about raising them.

I used to think that. Until one actually attacked me full throttle. The thing pretty much curb stomped me...spartacus style. His head was off soon after.

Thanks to the first few posters who gave me actual suggestions

For the rest of you who say I should just eat them, and that there is nothing wrong with it, I want you to understand that I would have an extremely difficult time killing & eating my boys that I take the time to hatch and raise, like a couple people have mentioned. Maybe it would be different if I frequently hatched sets of chicks to sell or eat, like many people here on BYC do, but I only have a small flock of 8 girls who I love, even though I didn't hatch them, I did raise all of them, and I became attatched so easily! I couldn't imagine raising a chick, becoming attached, then eating them! And I'm sure it is even easier to become attached when you have hatched them yourself haha! Now, this is just my opinion, so please don't take any offense

Also, SherrieT - I think I do have somewhat of right, even responsibility, to find the boys I have raised a good home. I may or may not be successsful, but I think I should at least try

I'm in the same boat as you. I live in the city and have to get rid of my roo.

1. My wife and I both made a separate post on facebook about it. To our surprise, we had suggestions! Our friends are mostly city folk like us, so we were surprised when they were asking their distant families and friends that had farms.
2. We contacted two organic farms
3. Highschool 4H clubs with take them - but they will use them to teach the students how to cull and butcher

So, we have had several leads, but no one actually took our roo. Our next step is craigslist.

Those are all great resources! Actually, in mentioning 4H, it reminded me about a breeder we have purchased chicks from before. She is a leader of a 4H group, maybe I can contact her to see if she would take a couple boys, not neccessarily for 4H, because I think your right about using the roos to teach how to cull & butcher

But I'm sure she would be willing to keep them as pets! If not, I could always try calling a couple local organic farms! Thanks for the suggestions

You have every right to your convictions about roosters. Unfortunately, it will prove virtually impossible in reality. It is a Pollyanna world view that runs head long into the harsh realities, imo. Given that fact, hatching chicks without a firm plan is propagation and is a questionable practice. Hatching isn't for everyone. With hatching comes responsibilities. Just sayin'.

But isn't part of that responsibility established before you bring them into the world? If you are unable to provide them with the good, loving home that you specify is a requirement for them, wouldn't it be more responsible not to hatch them in the first place?
