Im new to being a chicken mom but love my girls! I have 3 Barred Rocks and 2 Golden Wyandottes all about 21 weeks old. The BRs have just started laying this week, one of them a thin soft shelled egg. I’ve read that the Wyandottes don’t start laying for another couple months, around 6 months old. I’d like to give my BR’s some extra calcium but do I need to keep it from the GW’s?

The other problem is that my girls are really picky eaters and don’t want anything to do with the Oyster shells (they also won’t eat mealworms!!!). What other ways can get them some calcium? Thanks everyone!

If you can get just your BR's, I like to use plain yogurt, or crushed eggshells in various treats. I have one hen who always seems to lay soft shells if she doesn't get her yogurt. The difficult part is getting it to just her.

Totally coincidental but I did give them yogurt treats today! I mix it with fruit and veg then freeze it for treats on hot days. I didn’t even think of it adding calcium. The GW’s ate it too but it’s not a lot...Thanks!
