I'd keep my kids and chickens far away from them. A Water Monitor will take chickens as they are carnivores. Their bite is nasty and painful and easily infected. A 5 to 7 foot lizard can hurt you.

There’s not much chance of keeping away from them - there are lots of them here. The chickens know to keep their distance, and the monitors keep away from humans so there’s not much to worry about. But they will eat eggs if they can find them, which is why we keep our nestboxes on our terraces until I can build a secure barn for my chickens.
