Hello...I am new to this site & I am soooooo excited!!!!! We became Grandparents yesterday as one of our chickens laid their first egg : )) Nothing today though : / Been going out all day checking but nothing! We have 4 chickens. We are new to this & have found out so much info on this site!!!!! The egg that was laid yesterday is very small. Is this normal? Will they get bigger as the chicken gets older? Why no egg today? Look forward to being the best I can be at raising our chickens!!!!!!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

It sounds as they your birds are just new layers, it can take a little while for all their "plumbing" to get going so it's not unusual for the first eggs to be a bit small (the size is going to depend on the breed too). It takes about 25 hours or so for an egg to be produced so you won't necessarily get one every day.

Hope you're enjoying your flock. If you have questions, feel free to ask. There's a ton of information here and a lot of friendly, helpful members.

Good to have you here!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on your first egg :celebrate NorthFLCHick has left you some great answers on your egg questions. It can take them a while to get their laying machines in order when they first start to lay. They just need a little more time and I'm sure they will be laying larger more regular eggs for you.

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future with them. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Thank you for answering me : ))
Still no more eggs but waiting patiently! These girls are so much fun...I was out giving them some watermelon when one of them went wondering.
When I called for her she came running. My neighbor was out & said, do you have names for them? Do they always come when you call them?
Yes, I named my chickens...Lucy, Molly, Mingming & Ethal : ))

We've always named our chickens!

Our current girls:
Tracey
Taylor
Mei Li
Ashley
Dianne
Erick
Zero
Beau
Dia
Robin (aka: Peanut)
Sue
Freddy
Scotty

Makes it more fun than calling them "that yellow one" or "the big fluffy girl" (or "hey you"), lol.
