we are having COLD weather here in alabama i noticed something weird with my girls....

I'm in Tuscaloosa, AL. I also had some cold chickens and noticed the fluff up and pull my neck into my body actions and also one shivering rooster. I think our chickens will make it this year and maybe (hopefully) this will be the coldest winter they see.

But the worst part of yesterday was our power going out around 3am. Luckily we have a fire place and i was able to coax the fire into coming back to life lol

it is a hard decision. part of me is like they are chickens and the Lord equipped them with the tools they need to survive.....

That's not really true. All the chickens we own are bred up the wazoo -- there's nothing "natural" about them. Some are bred for heat resistance, some for cold resistance, some to lay eggs 300 days a year, even when they should be taking a rest because they need the energy to stay warm.

I was discussing cold weather care for the chickens with a co-worker, and he said, "I heard chickens are so dumb that without humans they would just die in the wild." That's about the stupidest statement I've ever heard -- chickens are domesticated farm animals. Of course they wouldn't survive without human care! But those derisive sentiments are par for the course in a society that numbs itself to the routinely barbaric conditions to which factory chickens are submitted by telling everyone that they're just dumb, senseless animals.

Herrad, that is true. I get so sick of hearing they are just chickens. well yes and that's just a dog and that's just a cat. ALL have feeling all hurt all eat all have a beating heart. i ask this person i know how would like to be in a pen all the time and someone spoke up and said they are chickens they don't know one day from the next. i was like yes they do they know when to go to bed and stuff. when a chicken is kept in a pen 85% of the time they are deprived of the things they love like fresh grass, bugs and dirt bathing. there are probably a lot of people that own chickens that keep them in pens and have never seen them dirt bath because they don't look at them as real animals for some reason. i have my chickens for pets and as i always say the eggs are an added bonus. i mean don't get me wrong when they aren't laying for a while im like ok girls i need some eggs. my hubby doesn't want us to buy anymore from the store. people that are interested in chickens need to research and read up on them and understand they are loving creatures. a friend of mine was basically telling me you cant spoil or l love on a chicken i said you done got to me to late i already know you can. he calls mine Hollywood chickens and i'll take it. i love em! and they are far from stupid. they have more sense than some humans i know
