My husband and I are in the process of looking to buy a home in the country, and raise some chickens, bees, and grow our garden. We have been married now for 12 yrs, I am a home health nurse, and he is a master gardener. He has had experience in raising chickens and bees. Myself not so much. I grew up in the country, cow country. I had friends with cows , horses, chickens ect... but never raised any myself. Now that we are ready for retirement, we want to get more self sufficient. I do sewing and quilting. He grows veggies. Hope to hear from everyone. We want to raise at least 5-6 chickens. I want the eggs. Im not into killing the chickens for food.. I'll let my husband do that. If he can, I just don't have the heart kill them.
Looking forward to hear from everyone.

Welcome to BYC!

That sounds like a wonderful idea! The country is a great place to be and chickens are wonderful, inexpensive, beautiful hobby animals to have. I can't kill my chickens either, I let others in the family do that, and a lot of the hens are like pets to me (and four of my five roosters

).

We love talking about our poultry here, so feel free to ask any questions you have or just chat about your chooks. I look forward to pictures of your new birds when you get them!.

Best of luck!

Good luck with your move to the country! Chickens and the country go together like peanut butter and jelly! LOL And what can beat those fresh eggs?! They are so delicious! Do you know what breeds you are wanting? Feel free to check out these links

Welcome to BYC!

Nice to have you join us. It sounds like you have some exciting things coming up, I wish you all the best with your move and future flock.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. If egg production is your main priority, I would recommend getting Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are very friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 large brown eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in your efforts to get self-sufficient.
