Congratulations! I am waiting myself. I am curious as to when they were hatched. Mine were early April, so I am trying to guage my wait. BTW, your line is from Ghostbusters....when the secretary answers the phone.
congrats...we got our layers from a friend ally ready laying so on day 3 we started getting eggs and on day 4 our neighbor got 2 dozen store bought eggs....
As near as I can figure, they were all hatched in the first few days of March. I noticed the Craigslist ad. that the hobby farmers (who *we* got the pullets from as teenagers) had put up on March 9th, the same day they put their ad. up so I'm assuming the pullets were hatched and shipped a bit before that.
The hobby farmers who had the chicks were advertising day-olds and 'young chicks' but we were lucky in that they consented to sell us the chicks as teenaged pullets (at about 14 weeks old) when I told them that we couldn't get our hens until we got our city permit first, so they kept our chicks and grew them up for us!
So, as near as I can guess, my pullets all hatched sometime between March 1 and March 9, 2010.
I just found my first egg this morning, but it's shell was very soft, pliable, and broken. I saw the pullet was having a hard time getting it out last night, but it was in the nest box and the yolk was intact so I doubt she pecked at it. Why would the shell be so soft? They get oyster shell all the time, plus dairy products for treats.
Congrats on your first. I still feel like passing out cigars, even if it's inedible this time!
We got another egg today, looks exactly like the 1st one, and was again laid in the run, LOL
And again, we weren't home when the big event happened so we have no idea who did it! Tomorrow, though, I can be out with them during ALL of the 'target time' to see who's squatting!
