We got our first egg two days ago but nothing since then, is that to be expected? We have two pullets that are 18 or 19 weeks old, not sure which one of them layed the egg. We also have 4 12 week old pullets and a rooster with them. my questions are, can we feed layer feed yet with the 12 week old pullets in there? can the rooster eat layer feed with out any problems for him? The older pullets were throwing up liquid and right after that we found our first egg, is that a sign of the changes their body is going through because they are getting ready to lay eggs? Thanks Matt

I would be verrry suspicious that they are laying soft-shelled eggs and eating them. I have two young pullets that started laying a while back, and I have been getting very few eggs from them. I also saw the one "puking" a couple of times, and the others eating it! (Grosss!). This makes me think it has something to do with egg eating. I have upped their protein and calcium, adding free-choice oyster shell, as well as layer food, and washed cottage cheese. I would start yours on layer food ASAP, as well as oyster shell, and keep a close eye on them (get any eggs/parts cleaned up). They are apparently very prone to soft-shells when they first start laying.
