Hey guys, we have 6 sex links and 2 barred hens, also 2 barred roosters. The sex links are 4 1/2 months old, the barreds are 3 1/2 months old. Ok, we got our first 2 eggs today (YEAH) and one of them was, get this, and egg IN an egg!!!!! Has anyone ever seen this before? Should I be worried about the hen that layed it? Also, someone mentioned dewormimg them now that they will be laying? We are still new to this, this is our first flock. Thank you all for any and all advise!!

The eggs in the beginning can be rather odd. I think my first one was like a jellyfish. But I'm no pro. I am sure someone will respond who knows more , but I would not stress yet.

That's pretty neat. Kind of like that image you see of someone peeling a banana only to find a smaller banana to peel on the inside. Lol

Seriously I don't know if this is something bad or not but it is neat.

Thanks to you all!! Well,i honestly dont think that they have worms but wouldnt know what to look for if they did. I mean, is it like dofs, where when they they have a bowel movement you can literally see the worms? Not trying to be funny, I really have no knowledge here!

Congrats on the first eggs, it is so exciting when they first start to lay. I did see a post the other day that had a link to a you tube video of the same thing, strange but i dont think it is anything to worry about, hens take a little while to get their egg making skills and equipment in working order, i would expect a few more strange ones to grace the floor or nest box for abit.
As for the worms, couldnt tell you how you can tell if they have them except i expect them to lose some conditioning and weight but i didnt worm any of mine when they started to lay. enjoy those yummy eggs

Thank you all very much! I guess my question really is, how do I know if I need to deworm? I ask becouse the guy at TSC told us we would have to give worm treatment when they started laying. So does this mean we shouldnt eat the eggs we have gotten so far (the count is up to 6 now YEAH!)? I honestly have no idea what to do from here on this. Thanks again, Melisa

You will know worms when-
A lot of runny stool
Droopy acting
Not eating/drinking

We've NEVER wormed our birds,

As for the eggs

You can eat them, but I dont know if yu want to eat an egg with an egg inside of it, but so long as it isnt 2 eggs inside of one another, you can eat it (even a double yolker is fine (:

I have seen several pics and videos of eggs within an egg. Check youtube as I believe that is where I saw the last video.

Haahaa egg in an egg question answer for you. The first eggs was laid internally "peritonitis" but was to small to pass and or she was confused as to wear to lay it safely or she may have been confused about what exactly was going on inside. The second "normal sized" embryo was release and dropped down plunging the the first "complete" egg through the second embryo and then a shell formed around them both as it's second to last step in the egg laying process. The last step being the distribution of the bloom. I also read your post about Dry Pox, and wanted make sure you knew about the permithrin dust. It's derived from the chrysanthemum flower and it's the same active ingredient in seven dust. I dust my yard garden pen and the birds themselves with it. The only place I don't use it is in the nesting boxes. It keeps the mosquito and fly population down, plus it kills mites, fleas and lice. I do spread it more regularly in the rainy season but it can be watered down and used as a spray also, so the rain just soaks it into the soil and or bedding if your pen does get any blow in rain. I know it doesn't sound too environmentally friendly, but it's only synthetically made to be mass produced, and from a natural source. I would antibiotic them myself, and a regiment of vitamins especially if they aren't laying eggs yet. Four days on and four days off for three cycles. I put the antibiotic solution in their food so they I am sure they get the proper dosage a day.
